Locking Tuners

I have a set of spezels on my hamer and I love them. My AS tele doesn't have locking tuners. What do you think of the Schaller locking tuners? Does it matter if you use a b-bender because I am thinking of getting a hipshot.

Locking tuners make string changes quicker and your pocketbook thinner other than that they they dont do much.

I have a set of Gotoh locking tuners on a thinline. Look good, have mass (headstock heavy!) weren't expensive, tune precisely and stay in tune.

On the other hand I have a hipshot B bender installed on a TexMex Tele with mediocre vintage style tuners. Although I should replace those tuners, the bender works fine with them. "It" don't "matter".

A good set of Gotohs, non-locking, are a relatively inexpensive buy and good quality. With tremolo bar, some folks seem to prefer locking, I never noticed a big difference with staying in tune. I also think locking tuners are too heavy, at least for my taste.

I've got a set of Grover lockers on a strat, and they're really nice. They are top-lockers, so you don't have the extra mechanism on the bottom; they lock automatically. The weight is similar to regular sealed tuners, as well.

I got them basically because the neck I got had been drilled for Schaller/Grover keyholes and I've not had much luck with conversion bushings (I always have to superglue them in). Personally, I prefer the Gotoh Klusons to most other keys, and find that using a locking wrap will serve the purpose almost as well as a locking tuner....

On the Kinman pickup website he has a really good stringing method outlined that I've used since I found it. Basically, you string the skinny strings so they kind of lock themselves on the standard tuner posts. It works great and keeps my teles in tune very well.

....why locking tuners? Just cost more, don't hold tune any better.

Do make string changes a *little* easier, not that big 'o deal though.

My experience, most tuning issues are related to neck, nut, or bridge/saddle issues.

Just my 2 cents...

But I do play live and my whole reason for getting them was to change strings quickly.

I have the Schallers and they fit right into a MIM Std or American Tele with not drilling or other conversions. They have been in my Tele for years (my strat too) and they work great.

Like I said, I play live so I have them in case I need a quick string change. Other than the string change issue they don't effect the tuning, sound, etc.
