For me, it really no longer matters
As I play more and more Teles (and other guitars), the actual shape of the neck doesn't matter as much to me as the radius and the fret type.

I voted -- and I voted a V-shape -- but I'm kind of with Joel on this.
I like the V shape, but I like other shapes, too. I even like those wide, thin Jackson necks from the 80's. I can pretty much play any type of neck -- none too well, I might add.

I have played a lot of Telecasters and own 2 myself. For me the most comfortable neck (not only Tele-neck) is the one of my 1999 AV '52 RI Telecaster that has a round U shaped neck.

Slim (I think)
I must admit that I don't really know much about all of the various necks that are available. I know that mine is thinner than most others that I have tried, so it must be a thin neck (right?). It has 03 JUL 68 stamped on the end -I have been told that the 03 relates to the type of neck. I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong.

neck shape terminology
Can someone correlate those neck shapes to the terminology used by Fender?
Descriptions as used in Fender Telecaster specifications (from Fender and Fender Squier online: "C" 50s Classic has the C, 7.25" radius and 1.625 nut width. '72 Deluxe RI has the C, 12" radius and 1.65" nut width. Squier Affinity has the C, 9.5" radius and 1.61 nut width. Squier Std has the C, 9.5" radius and 1.65" nut width. Squier Custom and Custom II have the C, 7.25" radius and 1.65" nut width. "modern C" MIM Standard has the modern C, 9.5" radius and 1.65" nut width. Am Std has the modern C, 9.5" radius and 1.6875" nut width "U" '69 Thinline RI and '72 Custom RI have the U, 7.25" radius and 1.65" nut width. I haven't liked the U shaped necks on those I've played. I've liked all the C and modern C shaped necks, but some of them I like more than others due I believe to differences in radius or nut width. In general, I think the 9.25" radius is just about right for me, but the 7.25" radius on my non modern C 50s Classic feels good too. I've yet to try the Squier Custom or Custom II, but I've tried all the others listed above. Sorry, I know your thread title said no radius content, but I can't sort out my neck preferences apart from the radius. And I haven't seen any radii for sale on eBay or in the garage sale here, that I could use to upgrade the radius on a neck. |

I like 'em a bit on the chunky side. I like the MIM Thinline necks, but I prefer something slightly thinner. I really like the James Burton neck but I wish it had a 7-1/4" radius.

I really care about the width down at the nut end. I like 1-5/8 to 1-11/16 on electric.
Medium frets. I also really like slightly rounded edges. 7-1/2 to 12-inch fret radius (I'm not too picky). I like all sorts of neck shapes, my faves being medium V and C shapes. |
