Marty Stuart and "Clarence" at the Grand Ole Opry

Caught a complimentary Friday night Grand Ole Opry show at the Ryman tonight, and guess who I saw? Yes, Mr. Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives.

Since they only did two numbers, Marty played electric on the first one--"Tempted"--with "Clarence" (Clarence White's original B-bender Tele) sounding great. Kenny Vaughan sounded great, too, with what appeared to be a '50s Tele Classic in two-color sunburst. (For you Marty and the FS fans out there, ever noticed how Kenny is moving away from his "Buddy Holly" look to more of a "Jerry Lewis as Professor Kelp in The Nutty Professor" look? :P)

Marty then played his solo acoustic tribute to Johnny Cash, "Dark Bird," which was one of the great highlights of the night, especially considering Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, David Rawlings, and Buddy Miller were on the same show.

But I got to see Clarence White's Tele. I sure wish I was lucky enough to strum a chord or two on it.

That's great and I'd love to see Marty, but I have to admit I'm pretty jealous that you saw Buddy Miller.

The Ryman

The two times I've been to Nashville, the highlight of each trip has been seeing the Opry at The Ryman (Marty pplayed the first time I was there). I also got to see a Gov't Mule show there. Walking into that place is like stepping backwards intime about 60 years - it is almost a religious experience. And hearing people like Marty (who seems to embody the spirit of The Opry more than anyone I can think of) play there is so special. there's nothing like it! Sounds like a great time, Joel.

So far (what I've found out) Clarence's close friends, musician-friends, and bands he played with (Byrds), and his family refer to his guitar as "Clarence's guitar" ..not "Clarence". I squirm everytime that nickname is used. :?

It still is, and will always be Clarence's guitar ..Clarence's Telecaster.

Just making a quick association between the man and his guitar. No harm, disrespect, or folly intended, certainly.

Did a show a couple months ago with Marty Stuart in Fredericksburg Va. Got a close look at "The Guitar" that I saw Clarence White play with the Byrds in the late 60's.
Liked it so much I got me a B Bender tele and love it.
Really like his band too Kenny Vaughn is a great player

Marty on Opry

Sounds like a great show. I've seen Marty at the Opry house but never been to the Opry at The Ryman. Sure hope to someday......especially "complimentary"...would be nice. I wonder if all the Ryman shows are sold out this year??

Absolutely not, Sam. Still plenty of Opry/Ryman tickets available, and the Opry will be at the Ryman Auditorium until February 26. Friday night's show was only half full, believe it or not.

Opry

Sounds like a good time to check it out. I did go to some Ryman shows on our vacations over the years. Everly Bros. story, All Star Guitar Night, and Traditional Music Awards. Just happened on to them. Not a bad find!

Man what a show list!
Probably the only week in ages I didn't know who
was on. (I was in MO)

Think Marty and his music are way way underated.
Glad to see he is playing out a good bit. I know
he has been through some tough times here.

Hey Joel

I've said it before and I'll say it again, you are a lucky lucky man. I'd give my eye teeth to see something like that !!

I guiltily admit, John, that up until recently I took this kind of thing for granted, having lived in Nashville all my life. To be perfectly honest, this was the second time I've ever attended the Grand Ole Opry in my life.

It's a shame what local treasures natives deprive themselves of, isn't it? And I just think back to when my younger brother worked the concession stand for the Opry and all of the country music award shows back in the '80s as a parttime job while he attended high school and college. He met virtually everybody big in country music at the time--even knew a lot of them on a first-name basis (well, they called him by his first name!)--and didn't seem to think it a big deal. :P

Well, let's see if I can recall--these guys (Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Patty Griffin, and Buddy Miller) made a thirty-minute appearance as The Sweet Harmony Traveling Review, which is the name under which this particular quintet tours.

To start off, Buddy played electric guitar and David played acoustic guitar (both guys, needless to say, are smokin' guitarists!) while Emmylou, Gillian, and Patty sang "To Know Him Is To Love Him."

Next, Buddy sang and played the Louvin Brothers' "There's A Higher Power" with Gillian on bass and backup vocals, and David on acoustic guitar and backup vocals.

Then, Gillian and Patty each soloed on a tune apiece (I forget which tunes; sorry!) with David and Buddy's backup on guitars.

To end their segment, Emmylou, Gillian, and Patty sang "Didn't Leave Nothin' But The Baby" from the O, Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack.

Awesome stuff, to say the least.
