Tung oil or wipe on Poly?? that is the question...

The neck on my 52RI was always kind of sticky and over the years i give an occasional light rub down with 0000 steel wool. it gets nice and smooth but doing that combined with lots of playing have given me a couple of spots that are wearing through...I'm going to sand the remaining finish off the back of the neck and want to know if i should use a wipe on poly finish (like the minwax wipe-on poly - clear satin) that i have from doing some furniture.....or should i maybe just wipe a little tung oil over it?????

leans to wipe on poly. I had tung oil on the neck of my main gigging tele (Warmoth boatneck). While I liked the way it played with the tung oil, I prefer the thin finish of the wipe on poly. I used the gloss and put a bunch of thin coats, and it has really stood up well.

With just tung oil, the neck got dirty looking (not dirty in a good way, just gross). As always, YMMV.

Personally, I'd just leave it.. that's how Fenders get after so many years of playing..

However, if I were to refinish it, I would just spray clear nitro over it... The new finish would melt right into the old finish..

You've used it before. You know how easy it is.
I like the finish & feel on the one neck I've done.

Try some Birchwood Casey tru-oil. Gun stock oil. You can get it at a gun store, wall-mart or GI Joes. I did my neck ( and body ) with it and they came out beautiful. The neck feels very good. No stickiness. Very fast and smooth. I do believe G&L uses the gun stock oil finish on their bass necks. It's cheap also. About $4.95 for a bottle. I did my body & neck with quite a few coats and still have about a half a bottle left!
