Dean Sarasota

I spotted one at a local shop. Small semi-hollowbody. Seems to be pretty decent. Anyone have any experiences with this or Dean guitars for that matter?

Hi Paul! Nice to see you posting. I've played several of these and came this close to buying one. I can't remember if it was the Chafin or Sarisota though as it was a while ago. Nice guitars. I believe Rob D had one once and thought it was pretty good. I'd like one of those with a set of Lollar Imperials. That would be a killer guitar.

Chafin

From my internet searches, it looks as though the full name on these is Chafin Sarasota. The name of the luthier who designed them was name Chafin and there is a line of Florida guitars with Boca and Sarasota among them. All I have ever known of Dean are the flashy pointy rocker guitars but little else.

Had one a few years back ...

... great bang-for-the-buck smallish semi-hollow bodied guitar that's offshore built in Korea. Lower bout is a scant 13", with mahogany neck and body, flame maple carved cap. All it needed was a good setup and the playability is excellent. The stock Dean humbuckers are pretty darn good, but I changed them out for a matched set of my favorite humbuckers, Rio Grande Texas neck and BBQ bridge. Note the pup connectors ...

... I found the guitar had a nice balanced tone, reminescent of an ES335. A nice resonant, slightly hollow and woody tone that won't readily feedback. Real nice playability. Ready for gigging. ...

... of course, I sold it. 8)

You guys are great!

What a great forum! Where else could you post a question about a relatively obscure guitar and get needed information.

I just hope it's still there....

Thanks!

Rob,

Are Rio Grande pickups really that good? It seems you put them in a lot of guitars.

Ummm, well, I like some of 'em - lots. Tallboys are still my fave single coil pups for Strats (or Teles), and the TX/BBQ set for humbuckers.

These dayze we have lots of great pup choices available for reasonable dollars - and not just Rio Grande offerings, too.
