Like P90's?

I have no affiliation with this auction, but this guitar looks interesting & I thought some of the P90 fans here might be intrigued (or horrified?) by this custom job:

Merry Christmas to you all!

Not my cup o' soup, but very interesting. I'd like to see Lee Ranaldo and the bunch get rid of the non-reverse Firebird once for an MV in favor of one of those.

This is probably a very ignorant question, but I've always wondered:

If you have 3 (or even 2) of the same pickup, how do you get different sounds? Won't the guitar sound the same in each position?

.....I'm an amateur, but I'll give you my take.

First off, no, even if IDENTICAL p'ups are placed in different positions, they won't sound the same. Closer to the bridge, the sound will be... I dunno, treblier and twangier, whereas closer to the neck, it is fuller, mellower and bassier.

And in some cases, the pickups aren't identical anyway. You might have 2 humbuckers on a Les Paul, but they may be wound differently, may have different construction components (such as ceramic magnet versus AlNiCo) etc.

All that said, I personally prefer to only have 2 pickups, yet another reason I don't care for Strats. The middle pickup seems to get in my way when playing.

Others probably have more technical explanations for it all.

Every positions under the strings emphasize different frequencies. The smallest vibration is near the bridge, therefore it'll produce the weakest, most trebly sound, while near the neck the vibration of the strings are much bigger, so it will give us more output (louder), and will bring out more low-mid and bass frequencies.

Also, combining pickups in various ways offers versatility.

One reason for using the same pickups is so one can be reverse wound reverse polarity, which will offer some anti-hum positions.

If they are too different, the balance for anti-hum will be off a bit, though Seymour Duncan does offer Tele sets that can humbuck (Nashville Studios, etc).

I think it looks cute

Three soapbars won't give you the same sound in every position, no sirree...
My P270 (do your math's :P ) has a beautiful Blues and Jazz sound in the neck postion. The bridge is LP jr kerrang. The mid pup is a very cool solo voice too. I have my pups wired so that position 4 gives me bridge and neck, a really wonderful almost strat like sound (good for fingerpicking too). Position 2 is bridge and mid out of phase for a really cutting funk tone. All-in-all a pretty versatile axe. I love it! 8)

cheers
Erik

PS mine are Fralin P-90's...but I can't wait to try some Lollars in another axe...
