So what finish would you all choose for this one?

Hi all!

Assuming this body (one of two I bought a couple of weeks back), ash top and back on poplar:

And something like this neck (haven't bought one yet):

What finish and guard would you suggest? I cannot make up my mind! (Won't be easier after all of your suggestions, I am sure. )

TIA,
Geir :)

Grain

That is a nice grain on the top. I wouldn't cover it up. How a bout a cherry sunburst or wine red top.

Yeah, I have been playing around with red. This one has some dark spots in the poplar as the picture shows, so a burst with dark sides would be cool, I guess. The other one doesn't have those spots, so on that one blonde or actually any colour would be nice too.

Geir :)

There was two of them up on eBay two-three weeks back, the seller has bodies up every now and then. Usually not bound though.

I got a good price on the pair, already bound. He had one more from the same piece of ash up a few days later. I'll post my comments as soon as I get them, in case others are interested, they are stuck in post or customs somewhere...

Geir :)

Dark To Light Blueburst!

This piece of wood just screams out to me: Blueburst.

Dark, almost black on the edges to a lighter blue in the middle. Wow. That would be good looking. The neck would be a nice compliment.

Take care.

Thanks! Black or white pickguard? Or something else?

Maybe like this:

Geir :)

How about a pearloid?

Gotta put something in the middle to lighten up the look. I'd say off white pearloid.

I like it!!!

Take cre.

So that would be this one:

And this one:

Maybe one of them could have a rosewood fretboard.?

Must say I am a bit scared of blue, because of the problems people have getting them nice. (Like the thread a few weeks back about RBoast's experience.) This will be my first "do it yourself" paintjob, so maybe I shouldn't get too ambitious...

Haven't forgotten your suggestion about making a baritone, BTW.

Thanks,
Geir :)

The grain is nice,

so what about Redburts? It'd look great along with a white pickguard.

It's a shame that the sides are already finished, because I've been dreaming with a clear orange binding body for months, and I think that It'd look great with that grain.

Just my 2 cents...

The sides are not really finished, just looks that way. That is the poplar center you see there. The dark spots are not reflections, they are actual spots in the wood. (This one has them, the other doesn't.) That is why I think this one will look best in a dark finish.)

Regular sunburst....

A good ol' 3 color burst never hurt anyone, and it would cover up the spots. You could even go with a "faded" red band, or even just a nice two tone....

Green gaurd? The "new" parchment white? Tortise? Everything goes with a sunburst......

Hmmm... Not said I wouldn't like it, although it was not my favourite on the 90s thinline. But that was with a tortoise binding and guard. Something like this would be nice: A whiteguard Esquire:

3 tone or 2 tone sunburst w/ white or black parchment gaurd. can't go wrong w/ either of those classic finishes. jmho looks like a lot of fun w/whatever you choose. good luck and keep us posted

Hmmm....how about Gretsch Orange?

The flame figure in the lower third of the body would make it look like the finish is dripping off the guitar.

Geir, I think you nailed it! :D It surely looks great. Blueburst would be nice too, but it's my understanding that blue is a tricky color to work with...

If the sides aren’t finished, clear orange would look gorgeous with that grain…I felt in love with that color when I saw it on the ASAT Classic that is in the G&L web site. It’s just beautiful…

It is for sale, if the price is right. :D
Rather unlikely, though. So I think I'll keep it, at least for a while...
