I have no idea about the authenticity of the guitar, but this : "He wrote the song "Train keep a Rollin" done by Aerosmith" in the auction description is a little over-enthousiastic - as far as I know, Burlison supposedly played guitar on Johnny and Dorsey Burnette's cover of Tiny Bradshaw's "Train kept-a rollin".

Walter - did you like the "we grandkids" remark? Is that supposed to be our seal of authenticity?

I always thought Paul played an Esquire on the early Johnny Burnette stuff. (please, let's not get into who played what, Grady Martin, etc.)

Oh, I don't know about the car accident, but all those early album and promo shots clearly show a whiteguard Esquire.

Pic of neck pup shows plastic insulation on the leads instead of cloth---and the surgical tubing spacer in the pic looks pretty new...

So, come on out and say it!

Are you guys saying "he is a liar, this guitar is a fake!" or aren't you?

When I saw Paul in Richmond, VA in the late '80's, he was playing a Thinline.

And that decal sure isn't genuine

Plus, it's a pretty bad fake, to boot--one of those counterfeit waterslide decals that still shows up on eBay from time to time. They never get the first "e" in Fender right.

Overall, the pedigree/authenticity of this guitar smells pretty fishy to me.

I knew Paul, and i don't know this guitar. but, i never saw all his guitars. he did have at least one old tele, the second one that he ever got. the first got backed over by a car, this second one is the one stevie ray borrowed for "the house is a rockin". this second one was an esquire i believe and had a neck PU added. but paul never told me about it having it refin'ed or having all those changes. but he did say he had a refinished 52. i never understood if he was talking about the same guitar or not.

paul had a BAD divorce in his last couple of years of life, which included his Ex running off with several of his guitars. he told me that she thought she had taken his 52, but he had the real one and she had taken a "reissue". his wife called me about a year or so after his death wanting to sell me the 52, and she believes she took the real one.

so what i'd like to know is this his blood grandson, or his step grandson. that would make a BIG difference to me in determining if it's a real 52.

I agree. Also, the decal looks like an '83 Vintage, rather than a '52.

now that we've heard about his wife having a reissue that she thought was a 52, i'll share my thoughts on this some more. he says its a 15 yr old refinish. that got me to thinking, it could just as easily be a 15 yr old reissue, and that's what i'd be concerned about as a portential buyer

Through Scotty Moore my husband and I knew Paul too...and like Johnny, I'm scratching my head a bit with this one.

The second one that Stevie Ray borrowed from Paul was indeed refinished - I specifically remember Paul saying he "wished so bad he wouldn't have had that guitar refinished" - but he was speaking of a BODY refin only...

I compltely agree with Joel about the decal and since I know for sure the neck wasn't refinished, the decal bit makes me wonder.

Cool guitar though nonetheless IMO, and maybe I'm naive, but I can't imagine someone lying intentionally about a guitar like this, I think he's just mistaken a bit about some of it. What about you guys?

If it's a re-issue and an honest misunderstanding of what it really is, why is there a TG (or TC, is what it looks like) with the date on the neck? If it's not original, someone along the way tried to make it seem that way.

  • After werkin with it fer several hours here I beleeb only the neck iss old and even it may knott be a 52.
  • All the rest looks 52 Reissue.
  • Here are the butts of a 92 Reissue and a shrunk down version of the one shown onna ad.
  • Notice the high or close tew the fret board truss rod nut onna older neck.

  • The tuners are old but knott kerrect fer the stated year however that "Sweet spot" sure looks good. The headstock shape seems as if sumbody hass sanded it onna tip and elsewhere as it looks a liddo mis-shapin.

  • No way werth the getus asked unless yew issa die hard fan.

    JMHO YMMV.

    Fake or not

Its not worth that kind of money even if it is legit. People who tear guitars apart on ebay for photos have sold guitars on ebay before. The photos have the appearance of being shot by a veteran ebayer and not just somebody's grandkid. I'd be wary of that for sure. I am surprised the amount of bids that it has got and the amount of them. 6k buys alot of vintage ax anywhere.

    Piece by piece

Let's give it a quick rundown in the order the guitar is described...

Neck original, but refretted and stripped
    Body refinished
First pickup may have been replaced
    Second pickup original
    Bridge replaced
Switches, wiring and knobs appear original

...that pretty much leaves you with what the seller will vouch for as an original neck, a pickup and tuners. For $6 grand!

And if it was indeed Paul's I think it'd fetch somewhere in that price range regardless, Rick...but that seems to be part of the mystery as well, you guys ain't kiddin'.

Thanks for taking the time to do that investigatin' Fuzzy, you've got such a great eye.

And Bill, great point! ...danged it...haha! :D

See, I don't think it's worth that kind of money. Paul may be a hero for us rockabilly fans, but at the very best this is just one of his "kicker" guitars - not featured on any famous recordings, or even used that much. To me, the only valuable Burlison guitar would be the Esquire on "Tear it Up".

It'd be cool to own one of his guitars, sure, but that's it. Just cool, not 6 grand for a partscaster cool.
