How do you tune a baritone guitar???
I've borrowed a friends 60's Silvertone and it's great, but I can't get it in tune to save my life. I don't think I'm crazy, but I'm rapidly approaching it! He told me he thought it was A-A. When I try that, it feels like the tuners are going to explode. B-B would be worse! The closes I can get it to with out feeling too crazy is E-E. Is that right? Does the octave go lower on the top three strings?????
Help! JOhnny Isaacs

Howdy Johnny!
It sounds like he may have it strung like a six string bass (E-E). The Gauges on a Bass VI would be .024--.084.
On my Baritone Strat tuned to A-A, I go with a .014-.072 for a nice low tension feel... You should be able to do a Baritone-like thing with a Bass VI... Many of the George Jones cuts from the 60's like "Love Bug" were cut with a Bass VI and not a baritone..

I do mine A through A. It stays in tune fairly well, considering it's a cheapo Korean Danelectro.
Those things feel flimsy as hell, though...I'm really careful with it.

I have my Danelectro Baritone set up for tic-tac 6SB tuned E-E. Take at look at the strings, Johnny. If they're all wound strings, it's probably an E-E set. Baritone sets normally have 2 plain unwound strings.
