Hot Rod Lincoln- need tip on playing it right
I'm trying to learn Hot Rod Lincoln and I wanna know
how to play it like the record. I've slowed it down with transcribing software and I'm alternate picking every note but I can't quite get it up to speed. Is this the way it's played or are there a lot of hammers and pulls? This one is giving me a little trouble. |

I play it with alternate picking, no ho/po. Use a metronome, start slow and build up your speed in increments. When you can't play it cleanly with proper timing, slow it back down until you can. Every so often, try it at full speed even if you crash and burn. As you do this you will find that you are able to notch the tempo up a little at a time. A metronome used properly will help you gain speed better than any other method.

Not positive I was right, but this is how I play it...no hammer ons or pulls.

eryque is right...
...the Asleep at the wheel version is the one I listened to to learn that one. I've been working on speed picking techniques lately too. HRL was about my max. sustainable controllable speed, for a long time. telemann51 is right the metronome is your best tool for increasing speed, notch it up slowly (maybe about 5 bpm) every time you practice. Also some techniques I've been working on lately have really helped me, try angling your pick slightly (pointing the tip just a little more towards the neck) that makes less contact surface with the string letting you cross the string a little faster. And instead of going straight up and down with your pick try making a small arcing or circular motion as you go down and back. If your hand or wrist is locking up on you then you're going too fast, notch it back down 5 bpm and practice it again. Lots of practice. :) Hopefully this helps.
