New (to me) Rice Custom Telecaster #51

Hi gang:

Been lurking around this forum for quite some time, but never posted. I just bought a Rice custom Tele a couple of days ago and am chompin at the bit for Mr. Fed-Ex to get that baby to my house. Here's the specs...

Ash body
1.05" fat C quartersawn maple neck (no truss rod) 9.5 rad med jumbo frets
Lollar Vintage T's
Glendale compensated saddles
Trans black thin nitro finish

Just wanted to introduce myself and my new tele. Any love for Rice out there?

Jody

Welcome to the family, Jodyb. I hope you enjoy #051.

Yes, there is a Rice Owners' Club on here somewhere..

Hiro, that is our pickup testing mule, and it has never been for sale for $1.00 or $1800. Everyone who visits us and plays it wants to buy it, but it is a tool we use regularly to check the pickups we make. We need it. It is a blast to play, though.. I teach with it once in a while, just to freak out my students with their fancy guitars.. lol It actually plays well and sounds great.

Thanks Rich:

The tele should arrive today, cant wait to let er rip. Its a beauty. John tells me he's played a lot of your guitars and thinks this one stands amoung the top. I'll post my raving review this evening or tomorrow. Happy to be in the Rice family.

LOL.. John comes by every few months and buys guitars. He's a really nice man. He just loves 'em and leaves 'em. He chalks it up to some primal urge for exploration, and has owned (and played) a bunch of our guitars. I think he still has one, I was a bit surprised he let 051 go. He was just over here last week, telling me how much he likes that guitar. I did a quick little fret dress for him while we were chatting, and now he sold it. Pretty typical for John.

The pickups on it were originally VooDoo pickups (Peter Florance makes them). We didn't swap them for the Lollars, but the Lollars sounded very nice in the guitar. I had forgotten just how big that neck is, but I adapted to it pretty quickly. After you play that guitar for a day or aso, ll the others feel like you're playing a broomstick.

Nice Tele. That color is real close to my bolt kit I did. I never understood how I came up with this color and I was going for a navy blue

Well, there are a few.. The biggest for me is there aren't any hollow spots, no metal inside, no artificial pressures on the wood from the tightened rod. Being quartersawn, it is much stiffer. This seems to transfer more vibrations throughout the whole unit, increasing stability and sustain. I like 'em alot.

Got her in today. What a neck! It is huge (1.05") yet is never cumbersome. Actually its the most comfortable neck I've ever played...great job Rice. The guitar is as nice as I had hoped it would be. Through the Dr. Z Maz Jr its got the all the twang, snarl, and bite that you could possibly want for a tele. Fit and finish are great. Do not hesitate to pick up a Rice Tele if you get the chance, Leo would approve :)
