Sleepwalk

Amos Garrett tearin' it up:

Could he bend that first note any farther? Great stuff.

That's some terrific playing - thanks for posting! He obviously has full comand of his guitar and produces some sounds I never associated with a tele. Intresting Tele too - maple neck + double bound.

Quite a bend there in the beginning of the verses. Pretty skinny strings I suppose - or does he have somekind of a bender there to assist?

It's a 5 half notes bend, and I'm able to do it on 9 gauge strings, but not on 10's. But contrary to Mr.Garrett I need a little "preparation time" to manage ...

I had an Amos Garrett instructional series on cassette years ago, and I think he mentioned he used 9-46 gauges on Fender scale length guitars. His famous half octave bend on the third string can be done on 10s, just takes a little practice. He's a very original guitarist. Glad he's still picking. His solo on Maria Muldaur's "Midnight at the Oasis" is pure genius.

Amos is a treasure ... his solo in "Midnight at the Oasis" still haunts me.

Listen to his haunting solos on Emmylou Harris' For No One (Pieces of the Sky) and Here There and Everywhere (Elite Hotel). Two of my all-time favourites.

I got to see Amos and The "Eh" Team in Saskatoon about 20 years ago. We were visiting my sister in law and were driving down the street when I saw a marquee for them playing at a bar there. We went every night for the 4 days we were in town. He's quite the Humbler himself.
As a matter of fact, the Tele that's in my avatar was nicknamed "Amos".

+1 on "Midnight at the Oasis". I try to use a similar approach to certain solos to this day.

Looks like rosewood to me... but great clip, for sure, and I've never made my tele sound like that!

Check Amos out on "Trucker's Cafe" on Ian and Sylvia's Great Speckled Bird album, "Please Send Me Someone To Love" on Paul Butterfield's Better Days album and "Lazy Bones" from Geoff and Maria Muldaur's Sweet Potatoes album-some of his finest work. You will not be disappointed I promise...

Me too. Looks like he's playing a Nashville tele. I got pretty darn close this weekend by playing the N+M position on mine through an AC30 with the tone rolled off a little.

I'm a big fan of his playing. I've seen him perform many times. I believe he is playing a mij esquire from the 80's with the extra pups added. There were some double bound mij esquires produced back then. I remember seeing some in Edmonton and thinking hmmmm.....cool. Could be something else he is playing though. He consistently sounds like himself in spite of a variety of amps he has played through over the years. I've seen him use fender concerts, fender twins, peavey classics 212, peavey delta blues 115. It's the man not the gear, that's for sure.

Lovely!

Remind me to mention Amos next time we do the underrated Tele player thread thing again.

Cheers,
Geoff

Would you guys like to join me for hotdogs and marshmallows at my bonfire? I just set all my guitars and amplifiers on fire. After seeing that, I quit
