With that and the same numbered neck plate you can easily get someone could make a fake CS guitar and sell it for way more than they had invested in the parts to make it.
Fender frowns on people selling the COA's and usually gets Ebay to pull those auctions.

Thats right a Squier with a replaced headstock decal and some parts that make it look like a USA or CS in pics an ad that says no returns and all the seller has to say is he bought it that way and had no idea it was a fake happens every single day.
Thats the reason Im so against people sanding off their headstock decals on Squiers. I hate when someone buys a fake guitar it actually almost makes me sick to my stomach.

some people would buy a Pet Rock if it had an "official" Fender logo on it.

Guys who buy stuff like that insist that, "the guitar just didn't look right without it...and I'd never sell it and pass it off as a real Fender, and it's my guitar I can do whatever I like anyway."

Just an odd thought - how would one tell if the certificates of authenticity are authentic?
If someone was really determined could they just knock one up in their shed (or on their PC)? Maximising profits and all that.. Apologies if this is a foolish questions, I don't know much about all the gubbinz that come with 'authentic fenders' |

But it shows how far buyers can go, just to justify their "partscaster" being more Fenderish by slapping a mim neck on it. |

Well, I mean, a Fender neck does make it significantly more Fenderish. If you mean make it more legitimate, well that is sort of silly.

You ever notice how somehow ReliableFenders parts are worth more than others? I suspect there's some dodgy bidding going on. I can't believe the money people spend, often buying second hand parts for more than new ones. I'm trying to buy a older American standard bridge for my 08 Standard, to run a hipshot bender. Everytime he has one they sell for like $45 -$50, you can buy a new one for that! |

That would not even be transitional (or authentic) that would be fraudulent. I would want a Pet Rock cert. Didn't the original Pet Rock have a pet license or cert? Selling a COA without the corresponding guitar is just WRONG.

I'm surprised reliablefender is selling a COA. My guess is that he's actually starting to hurt for money because of the recession (I'm on his e-mail list and he lists sales just about every week these days trying to drum up business). But I can't see why anyone would buy this for "legitimate" reasons, so he ought not to sell it. Wouldn't this open him up to a lawsuit from Fender?
I built my Esquire all from Fender parts, much of which (body, neck, pickguard, pickup, and hardware) I acquired from reliablefender at really good prices--and the guitar is great! I'd only complain about the neck being overpriced. Just couldn't get one for a good bid for some reason. I'd like to get a "real" Esquire neck, but they are fantastically overpriced. Curiously, I didn't like the neck (standard MIM tele neck) once I received it, so I put it on my old Squier and used the Squier neck on my Esquire. Then, I must admit, I sanded off the Squier logo--the guitar isn't a Squier anymore is it, really (ok, I'm a bit of a snob)? But I did leave the Squier serial number on the back, just in case anyone ever inquired about the guitar. I can't call my guitar a Fender since it isn't an actual Fender production guitar, but on the other hand it's almost all Fender parts. I guess it's a FrankenFender (or a Fenderstein?). |

Wow....that's shaky.
I can justify applying a Fender decal on an Fender licensed neck for a partscaster...it looks right, and if I ever sold the guitar or just the neck, I wouldn't even consider not revealing the fact that it's not an actual Fender neck. But I can think of no reason or rationale for owning a COA that didn't come with it's corresponding and appropriate guitar. Yeah, I know it's a fine distinction that I'm making, but a stand alone COA doesn't just push the envelope, it shreds it. Tom |
