Just putting it out there... double-cut Tele?

Guys,
at the risk of upsetting some of the more traditional members here I was just thinking about body shapes and how the enduring ones are 50+ years old...

Now don't get me wrong ; but what do people think about a double-cut Tele?

Has anyone tried to do this before? (and please no-one say 'duuuh yeah, it's called a Strat!')
I think it'd be pretty fresh!

Bill Wharton (aka The Sauce Boss) plays a '53 that had been hacked that way (it was that way when he got it, apparently)... wicked guitar...

that's cool.
I'm a little surprised the idea never caught on and Fender haven't been flogging them yet... Anyone got any more pics that they've seen?

I would love to build one of these, I think I'll have to experiment to try and achieve that shape.

You can find them on Ebay. Fender made them for 2 years or so in '05 and '06 i think.

Yeah, I find them really ugly.

How about a single-cutaway Strat? I remember seeing a no-cutaway Les Paul Custom that some jazz guy kept strung with .013's as the "sit-in" guitar at his gigs, the encourage people to leave the stage quickly.

Newtwanger's Proto is actually neater that 95% of the double cuts out there. But, the double cut is IMO not to be recommended because unless you are very gifted as these 2 guys are, your net result is gonna be, uh.

Let me just say there are other shapes I like better.

IMO, YMMV, all those warningisms we use.

In my opinion the concept and the look trumps so many of those other ill-conceived butt-ugly things that appear on the guitar market at regular intervals. Sure Fender isn't in the league of Gibson when it comes to that, but something like a doublecut Tele isn't very far out, and would be light(er) than a standard issue Tele.

Peace, Mike.

Peace, Mike.
I think that was part of the idea with the double cut Tele Fender manufactured in the mid 2000's. It was a semi hollow body with the f hole along the upper part of the body. It had t p90's. My friend bought one and was quite pleased with it.

A few months ago I entertained the idea of making something like this. I found the single cut version on the net, ( most likely on this site ) and then photoshoped it a bit. Sort of a Tele-335. I may still try it down the road.
oops, I guess I've forgotten how to post pics on here. brb.

Nah nah nah a Strat's got 3 pickups and a Trem, and perfection is subjective hence my caveat at the beginning of the thread...

I genuinely never saw a DC Tele before. I really like newtwanger's proto, and ReVintage your guitar's executed with some panache too.
Not sure I like the maroon thing from Fenner tho!

I like them, especially for an otherwise non-traditional Telecaster style guitar. I am planning to build one with Lawrence/Wilde L500s and a USACG neck. I have most of the parts, so it is just a matter of getting to it.
Going to paint it Ford Black Jade ('69 color), sort of a tribute to my first car. Will be my first attempt at routing a neck pocket, and binding. I have plenty of wood so if I mess it up, I can always start over.
Usually I don't go for the double bound, shiny paint look, but for some reason it seems right for this one.

The shape was traced off of a 70's MIJ tele knockoff. It started off with a single neck humbucker and a fretless neck, went to a shortscale fretted neck with a Jazzmaster pickup in the bridge, and finally with two humbuckers and the current neck.

Tha vast majority of guitars pictured in this thread do not have tele pickups and bridges.

Squier put out a line 2 or 3 years ago with some silly finishes/wiring called something like the "Hard player," or "musician series." It was a double cutaway that looked like tele specs with a symetrical headstock. It looked like a cross between a double cutaway tele and the ibanez artist series.

I dunno...
messing with the Tele is like messing with the Mustang; the Mustang II was not worth a scrap.
There are PLENTY of double cutaways out there, why change the Tele into just another one?
Call me old-fashioned.

I guess the red one above, with the f hole and P90s, looks OK, but overall I just can't get into the double cut look much either . . . .

I'm digging the double cut Teles. Does any of the custom parts makers, USACG, Warmoth, sell these bodies?

I have always wondered if the neck-to-body connection on a double cutaway with bolt on neck is inferior to that on a single cutaway design such as the Tele.

Yeah I've wondered about that myself as the neck on my strat has occasionally wondered from the straight-and-narrow!
Easily rectified though.
I reckon if you go down the threaded insert route the neck wouldn't budge though.

As for the doublecut neck/body connection I reckon it'd be fine so long as it screwed in tight enough.
'They' do say decent bolt-on necks are actually tonally superior to set necks don't they? Because the layer of glue between body and neck has a slight dampening effect..?
