Oldie but a goodie
Had a chance to enjoy this guitar for an afternoon recently at my buddy's place. It's a late 53/early 54, 7.25 lbs, nice round neck, beautiful sounding tele.

He has an early '52 as well and the color on the '54 is actually a tad(eo) darker in color - the flash in the pics above also takes some color out of it.
But yes, it's not been to any smoky bars. Really clean blackguards that haven't been out of the case much are actually quite light in color, almost pure ash white. Ones that have had a lot of exposure become more butterscotch and then can become very dark like Bill Hullet's nocaster.

Hey!!!!!!

Hey, watch out!!! I resemble that remark!!!! Poorplayer......I agree about he old ones being almost pure white when new....if you look at the old pix from then they just look way too white in the photos not to be...there are more shades in black and white pix than there are in color, so I think we're right!!! (as I pat ourselves on our internet backs) Bill Hullett PS......that is a great looking Tele!!!!!!!! __________________ |

I love how the side are practically solid.
2 theories are oyt there: They sprayed the sides and then the tops, so the side often got a double-shot and Leo didn't like the edges of the wood showing. Either way, they all have their unique look to them. As the color got lighter, the Halo was more prevalent.
