He paid $135,000.00 for a Tele!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9Tfd...eature=channel

I imagine this is one of the greatest Telecaster collections. Leaves me in a cold sweat.

No wonder Fender gave him a signature model! It's like a loyalty bonus...or maybe they want some back for the museum in Corona!

Great vid, beautiful guitars.
I wish they would have left off the music.
135K for that guitar doesn't seem too extreme as the instrument looks like it was just made yesterday.

Wasn't he still looking for a Broadcaster in a previous vid of his collection? Or is this the same vid? Easily, I would have paid $135k for that if I was rich. Dang.

I'm not sure if part of me finds that kind of expendeture (imagine the total expendeture there!) on a collection a bit obscene when there is so much good that an individual could do with money.
And a few guitars ought to do most humans.
Another view may be that a hundered - or more - people may have appreciated one pride and joy each from that collection, rather than one man who simply cannot appreciate all of them, individually, to that same degree.

But, I cant help liking the guy. He's done a lot for 'the tele' in a modern context - and it is his money, its his life, his choice and its a beautiful collection.

Well .. I might sell him my mint, cased Nocaster with the tag still attached that I found under Uncle Bobs bed last week .. maybe ..
But I'm thinking of routing it and putting a GFS 'bucker in it ... cough .. :)

Same vid. And I believe it's a year or two old so some of the prices he's quoting are likely a bit out of whack with the down market of today.

Guitars (of all makes and years) are constructed to be played. Paying 135 000 for a hunk of wood with some hardware is to me an insult to those of us using said hunk of wood to provide an income for ourselves and our family.

Wow, he sure owns the hell out of those guitars. Way to, uh, have stuff there, John 5.

He's like some kind of trust fund baby, right? Isn't his family some big-time industrialist dynasty or something?

His father was senator and his mother's family came on the Mayflower. He prepped at Choate and was in the Skull and Bones at Yale, just like Dubya.

You're right about it being his money Telepath and I feel confident that John 5 pays his taxes like the rest of us. Personally, I don't buy his records, or therefore, his guitars for him, I just don't go for the kind of thinking that judges what people ought to do with their money.
At least the Teles are in the hands of someone who will take good care of them.

Even without collectors like J5 I couldn't get my hands on a 51 Nocaster. My best bet is to keep my eyes peeled for quality, affordable instruments that may be valuable someday; whether that's a Mexican Fender, a Reverend, or whatever.

I would agree...if it were just a hunk of wood with some hardware. But this is one of the rarest, and most highly sought-after musical instruments on the planet.

He got a bargain.

I read an article about john 5 learning the Country type picking from larry Campbell when they were with K D lang. After that he took as many country lessons as he could and said it was like learning guitar all over again.I am amazed when a great guitarist keeps going to teachers to learn more, kinda of like Randy Rhoads did with Classical guitar.

JAM
He grew up in Grosse point, MI, which is pretty wealthy. He's been working as a session guy since he was 17, and it appears that he has had no drug problem, so he's probably got a little cake left over.

eited: Post Toastie,
From what I've read of the guy, he's constantly trying to learn new things wherever he is. I'm not a big fan of his music, but he can do a lot of diferent things.

Yes, Grosse Point would indicate his family was not living in a shack.

I have heard him do some metal work with Albert Lee banjo rolls thrown in - and it sounds pretty damn good. He is a melodic player and quite a talent. Fender seems to think highly of him...and I hear is signature Squier is a dynamite bargain.

I picked up one of his demonstration DVDs. He seems like a pretty sincere guy, who has a genuine love for the Telecaster. Surprised, he's not on here. I was impressed that he has no bias for musical genre, and I like his work. He's earning those guitars.

He's easy to like as a person, at least as a person on a DVD.

Not to mention a classic Telecaster (or any other highly sought-after guitar model) is a great financial investment.

It's better that J5 has collected them and not just some random rich invester who can't even play guitar or something.

It's also a cool mission he has, if he achieves his goal of collecting one of every telecaster made then people in the future can see and appreciate these guitars that we all love so much and he'll be preserving a great piece of history.

Also he is a crazy player and he earned all his money himself playing music so good on him for spending it on cool **** that he likes.

Great point. Jimi Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner" Strat is owned by Paul Allen. I doubt it will ever be played again.
Better that a super talented player like John 5 owns these thing. Maybe they will not be played often, but they will be played correctly.

Excellent points. I may not care for some of the music he plays but he has my respect as a great player and even more respect as a fellow lover of fine instruments. I hope he succeeds in his quest.

Yes but the Hendrix Strat is on display for anyone to see at "The Experience Museum" in Seattle. I saw it earlier this year. I bet john 5 will never play it live so i will never see that Tele in person.

Not a Tele...there's a certain British Knight that paid 250K (yep, quarter mil) for a rare left handed Les Paul right here at the local auction house. It was not celeb owned.

The "1968" Thinline he shows at 3:31 isn't a 68. It's a late 71 or later.
