Squier Tele with P-90s
I just got home from Daddy's Junky Music, where I was playing a made in indonesia Squier Tele Custom with P-90s. In spite of being very poorly intonated, this guitar was a hoot. More fun than a barrel full of monkeys.
I picked up the guitar, and it was very resonant, enough that I said "I must plug this in." It has the custom style electronics, upper bout selector switch, separate tone and volume for each pickup, witch hat knobs (I've never liked these). I settled on a little Peavey combo (don't know which one, but it was surprisingly loud). when I was trying to tune the guitar up, is when I realized how badly it was intonated. Gave it a go at it just the same. Yeah, the P-90s were noisy, depending on orientation you could get it to quiet down a bit. I was pretty impressed with how it sounded. Sure wish I could have done a proper setup on it, and put some better knobs on it. But it was a fun guitar to play. For giggles, I switched in the drive channel, and after a while, dimed the pre. Let me tell you this. HOLY EFFING CRAP, BATMAN, THIS LITTLE BUGGER ROCKS !!!1! In addition to having excellent, almost vocal-like screaming leads, the bass strings were still big and fat and deep. Power chord sustained sounded great. I am far from a metal monster, but I rocked and rolled in my youth, and this setup was a freaking blast. What I wonder, is what difference would having P-90s on a tele, with the more traditional electronic setup one volume, one tone, with selector switch right by them? How much of the sound was a result of the load of 4 pots vs two. Plus, I do not know what value the pots on that squier were. Don't get me wrong, i still love the traditional tele pickups, but I will have to get a second tele with P-90s for doing the balls out rocking. |

I had one of these and only parted with it to trade in on another tele - a nice MIM fender with MIJ neck.
However, I've been missing it ever since. I believe it had 500k pots. I had one of the humbucker models and put in GFS Mean 90s. I gave that one to my grandson. What next? I bought another But I digress. I loved the P90s and wrote to Squier to ask if they were, in fact, real P90s since they were nice and hot and someone on another forum speculated they might be P100s. The reply was yes, they are real P90s. I've never read anyone who owned one of these who didn't like it. Here's the spec page from Squier: http://www.squierguitars.com/product...g%3B+Custom+II |

You're right, a fun rocking guitar!
I had to shell out for a set-up on my Custom II, but considering how cheap it was anyway it wasn't a problem. The pups are a bit too hot for my bad monkey, but I've heard (on TDPRI) they go well with a Cool Cat - hope I get one for Xmas!

Great little guitars - love mine:
![]() The "Duncan Designed" P-90s are very articulate and can be very mellow, so the guitar can also be good for that "jazzy" tone too. Regrettably, this Tele was pushed to the back of the line when I brought my Classic Vibe home (ANOTHER superb offering from Squier), and it just doesn't seem to get any playing time these days. I had almost forgotten about it!.. Maybe I'll dig her out tonight - you've inspired me!....

The fun fact is that Squier's P90 Tele custom is such a succes that Fender have decided to up the ante here and release a proper Fender branded version.
The Black Dove Tele deluxe. ![]() I can't wait to get my hands on one of those.

Nothing that a hack saw can't fix.
(but with me being a pro repairman, that's easy talk. Seriously, don't try this at home, you could ruin your guitar.)

"Sir - please step away from the instrument and drop the hacksaw on the ground. Now kick it over here..." ![]() * Note to self *: Do NOT take any Teles to Blazer for repair work - sounds like he learned his trade in an abbatoir....

I know that you guys sometimes just don't "get" our British sense of humour (see - we even SPELL the word differently!), so just to show you that it was just a bit of fun...
