This might be of more interest and use, it is a self written CV, by Joe, but in set list format..the type you might typically see in a dressing room.

I am plugging away. My free time, isn't as free as I would like it.

Here is the stencil cut in almost final form. The plastic is a thin topsheet used when Kinko's binds books. I've made it wonky (to borrow a screen used stormtrooper helmet description) filled in part the missing part of the N. The S and O have really thin separators, so my first tests aren't as clean as they could be. It's also wonky, because I couldn't make a perfect stencil if I tried.

I'm going to use spray adhesive on the back of the stencil to tack it to the guitar to get better definition.

Lets see.

His father was attached to the diplomatic corps stationed in Turkey I believe.

Why rely on memory when there's Wikipdedia:

"Joe Strummer was born John Graham Mellor in Ankara, Turkey on 21 August 1952. His mother Anna Mackenzie, a crofter's daughter born and raised in Bonar Bridge in the Scottish Highlands, was a nurse. His father Ronald Mellor, was a British foreign-service diplomat born in Lucknow, India. Ronald Mellor had an Armenian maternal grandfather and a German Jewish paternal grandmother."

stencil design & layout

when you lay out the design mask you could use stencil guide holes pencil lines or tape to keep it aligned like a sign maker does

0______0
N O I S E

but i doubt joe aligned that mask you can see the misalignments he prob just threw it together on a whim freehand good job mike

interesting how an artistic person decorates their personal stuff in a style expressing themself trying getting an idea across or some message

Thanks Brewwagon. Yeah it's wonky. Also my reference is blurry and I am squinting to make the blurr look solid. I wish I could have just found the right stencils as stenciling is a new trick for me. Laid out wonky though makes me think about Joe more. More like his fingerprint, or the person who might have helped him.

I like your notes regarding registration.

Thanks,
Mike

Rasta Template - Rough Stage.

Rough template of the Rasta flag.

I traced the pick guard on white paper & then copied the trace on the plastic sheet. That way I could line up the shape on the picture reference. I used torn sheets of paper to follow the contour of the color's edges. That way when I traced them, I was able to get a more accurate (to me) and interesting (to me) line. The lines extend and I'll have colors extended so the final piece can be trimmed down to fit.

Notice my fancy Starrett ruler. I am pretty happy with myself. About $4 bucks/inch.

So I guess now, there is nothing to blame for my inaccuracy in measurement other than myself.

Olaftheholy,
Thanks for the background on Grolsch! That totally makes sense. I wish I could pick a case up in person.

noise

i was watching stalag 17 today
http://www.ovguide.com/movies_tv/stalag_17.htm

the credits are in stenciled script
then it dawned on me

the military uses that script as a marking so its symbolic of a prison camp war or being militant fighting for a cause just like joe did

everything has some meaning even in art on a guitar

Great thread! I wonder how randomly or off-handedly JS must have done some of this. Being random or off-handed is easy. Reproducing it isn't. You seem to be having an awesome time of this. Your brother's getting a treasure for his bday. I've seen very few gifts this steeped in love and time. It made me think of this thread, one of my favorites:

The Barncaster Thread

Whatever you do, keep having fun. There's little other point.

Hey Groovey,

That political discussion was great. I'd have had trouble keeping my composure with Ms. Lester, but Joe and Paul are toughies. Sensitive, honest, articulate, and in the moment. Reminds me a lot of my not so famous punk friends.

Still to Do List -
- Set IAO sticker.
- Finish finishing neck.
- Colour image for Rasta sticker.
- Printing the Rasta image.
- Set Rasta Sticker.
- The Awobblin Set List - Reconstruction of Joe's handwriting.
- Wire it.
- Add minor weathering.
- hand it off for the setup.
- Give it away.

Enjoy this version of NOISE while it lasted.

I am not happy with the look of my stencil, and I am ready to open a can of yosemite sam and sand it off, repaint and restencil. I took this as an opportunity to practice weathering.

I sprayed adhesive into a cap and then q-tip'd adhesive to the back of my stencil. The idea being it might hold the stencil down during paint application. Removing the adhesive was a witch.

If the posts seem slower, I am in class this week.

Mike, if you haven't sprayed your neck yet, I would recommend laying it down horizontal.

I know many spray their necks hanging but I like to spray flat so the lacquer doesn't run as I tend to lay each coat on a little thick to get that depth.

The amber looks best when there is depth to it.

Bossaholic, Funny you mention spraying the neck horizontally. I had to switch to horizontal because I couldn't see the highlights right to know how the spray was laying out. I ended up with a process of shooting the headstock, then flipping the neck fret side down on two spray cans.

It seems that you've exaggerated the irregularity of the letters in your fastidious attention to detail, and that you're in danger of doing the same with the Rasta flag or whatever it is. Sometimes you need to tear your eyes away and get a fresh look. Tunnel vision creates distortions. Thankfully Joe (or perhaps Paul, the painter/art director of the group, who probably did the stencil although not any other part of the guitar) didn't need to copy anything.

Has anyone thought to consult him about this? Call his gallery and ask them to forward any questions you've got. He seems a nice enough fellow; you might be surprised.

BR, That's great question.

Originally the idea was to cultivate an existing flower garden.

Now they function as curiosities, and noisemakers say if someone were to open that window from the outside (again).

Your humor did cheer me up. I needed that.

Thanks man,

Yeah, well, if you're going to cultivate the garden on your bike, best to make sure the wheels are attached securely.

Not even going to go near S&M pitchforks.

Just concentrate on that fantastic git. Looking forward to the next update!
