Thanks Brew :)
That's very nice of you to say. Might be because I'm a train wreck. Every thing is a complete learning curve. This is an absolute blast.

Thanks for adopting the newb. You have my sincere gratitude.

AWobblin!
On this version of Joe's guitar, there is a white set list taped permanently to the top front edge. Approximately 1.5"-ish wide x 4-5"-ish long. I've been wondering how to approach that piece for my version. Do I leave it white, do I wag illegible sweat stained text, or do I wait for AWobblin to give me an amazing text sample (photoshop) and look for records of a particular show's setlist from 1977? I say door number 3. Yer the man!

Pete 42,
Thanks for the Reference pics. [tr-click, save, rt-click save...]
Getty Images seems to have the best color representation of the Rasta flag I am seeing. When this build is over, I'll circle around and contact them about buying a color print of their best example.

I love this project, but it would never have been as much fun without you guys!

The strap! Another fun thing to tackle.

I think Joe uses several guitar straps over the years. I am not familiar with all of them, but I have it on good authority Joe used a black Gretsch strap, with white stitching and a silver foil logo. At least he wore it for a few shows. That good authority would be my eyeballs and a stopped frame in a video. The only vintage Gretsch straps I've seen are on ebay. The logo seen is gold, and the stitching appears to be dark. I am not sure if the previous owner used a black sharpie to kill the white thread.

This is an old 1960s/1970s leather strap for a Gretsch guitar, I found on ebay for a kazillion bucks. ($150) Which is really only expensive b/c I don't know the miles left on it.
Vintage Ebay Example:

The new straps appear to use darker stitching, and I am not seeing foil logos. New prices range from $29 to $49 on the interwebs, but last night found a great deal ($19) HERE. The minimum order is $25, but 6 bucks in nose kazoos later and I am set.

New Example:

I think foil logo replication could be accomplished by:
1.) Emboss the text in the leather.
2.) Apply an adhesive where the embossed logo is.
3.) Lay silver or gold leaf into the adhesive.
4.) Brush excess leaf away.
5.) Use a sheet of wax paper and a wooden spoon to embed the leaf.
5.) Seal the entire strap.

I posted a "HELP" thread for this on my prop forum and the only reply so far is "yep sounds right, but the stamp would be expensive". I'd be doing this by hand.

Suggestions for modding a new one, or sourcing a good deal on an old one are most welcome.

Thanks,
-Mike

I've also joined the fine folks of Gretsch-Talk forums to learn more about the Gretsch Straps. Super nice folks too. I'll share what I learn on GT.

I thought it was the Buddy Lee straps that he used. I'm not particular, they appear to be close in style. I would be intersted in finding out if he preferred the Gretsch straps for a reason.

In the book The Clash: Before and After I remember seeing a photo of all the guitars and basses sitting in stands. IIRC, almost all those guitars had a strap on them.
I will try to find it later when I get home from work.

Try to get a copy of 'The Clash Before and After, Photographs by Pennie Smith' as mentioned by JimmyJam. The coolest Rock 'n' Roll book ever!

Myeek,
Yeah it's expensive.. and just so you know, I believe all the photos are black and white.
So, no color references there.
I believe I paid $30 in the early 80's. But it is more candid than most stuff I've seen out there. Has witty quips from the lads below the pics.

I only know one of their songs, from the Burning Ambitions: History of Punk album:
Keys To Your Heart.

Can't wait for that book JJ.

My wife and I have a bday party to throw tonight for our daughter. 29 6 year olds, and 14 parents. Her actual bday was earlier in the week, but this was a better day for most 6 year olds to let loose.

BoogerRooger is definitely from that era. So lucky.
I envy some of the shows you must've seen.
Like opening for Roxy Nightclub or any Clash concert.
Even to catch some of the later stuff like Charged GBH or Killing Joke, The Exploited.... agh... I could go one for days..

Waddya mean 'from that era'?! Makes me sound like an antique. I'm current, relevant I am!

That said, I just looked on the back of the book at the price I paid when it originally came out in 1980. £4.50!

I still don't know how, but despite loving them since the 'White Riot' single, (still remember clearly the first time I played it), and London Calling still being my favourite album, I never did see The Clash live.

Never cared for the later punk stuff, but the Clash's interest in rockabilly and country and their clear respect for their Rock 'n' Roll forebears led me to explore American music, and from Joe I first learnt what a Telecaster is.

Anyway, don't want to let my nostalgia hijack the thread. How's the gitfiddle coming along?

Sorry, No offense intended. I'm 39, about to turn 40. So, I'm not far off.
I still respect the older punks that paved the way.

Checking the price of mine, it appears to be 5.25 in pounds (sorry, can't do the ASCII for the # symbol).
My first exposure to The Clash was a friend's brother who just just got London Calling. I then backtracked to earlier stuff and it just kept getting better. Rude Boy about 6 months after solidified my appreciation for them immensely.

I never knew what "dub" was until I heard Sandinista. I was slightly aware of reggae, and getting into ska at the same time.

That band exposed me to so much, I will never be the same.

Me too, that's why I'm really interested in this project. I'm particularly impressed with Mike's attention to detail and can't wait to see (and hear?) the end product.

I was at this first albums concert when they took that picture in NYC at the Palladium on 14th street.

I was a little young for the one on the bottom that came out about 20 years before London Calling

Groovey called it. Kids playing actually playing "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" on Guitar Hero at this place.

Both brothers were there. The unaware Christmas "mark" and my little bro Pete who discretely dropped off copies of our work outside the event.

Time to make stencils I guess.

Oh yea and the next time I bragg that it hasn't rained here in a long time, slap me. It rained this morning.

That Palladium show was the second one. I saw the first in February of 1979, but got in trouble at boarding school (smoking hash and out after curfew) and missed the September show. I saw the third one, though.
