What´s up with this cavity?

So I removed my pickguard for the first time on my road worn tele and found this:

Yeah, I've got that on my Am. Dlx, except I've got a swimming pool in the neck, and room for a single coil middle, I would guess.

No idea what that little nobbin' space is for. Its kind of curious, because it doesn't lead to anything, its just there.

But, yeah, I've got that, too.

I've heard that called a smuggler's cavity and stuff but my understanding was that it is representative of MIM bodies, something to do with the CNC.
