Tele Neck Profiles

We've had quite a few questions about neck profiles lately, and I just saw these pictures on Musikraft's eBay store. While every manufacturer differs somewhat, maybe this will help in explaining the different options we discuss...

Thanks Kevin - knew I'd seen something like this before, but not in so much detail, and no idea where it is.

Great help if you can't get your hands on the neck to feel it.

Excellent post...make it Sticky!
Long time ago, I passed on a V neck Japanese Squier Blond Tele, for $100.00.
My butt is almost gone from kicking it ever since!

Now we should match up the profiles with their respective guitars, that would be handy.

I'm sure these profiles will only make it even more confusing - sorry ...

There are way too many different designations, and many of the different necks really aren't very different at all!

Can someone tell me the difference between a "Chunkey-1 C 1st .90" and a "Chunkey U 1st .90" ? (The profiles seems slightly different at 12th fret though).

And what's the difference between a "C" and a "D"-neck?

And a "Fat D" doesn't really look that much different from a "Chunkey U" except it's deeper?!!

And what about my own AV '52 RI neck? Fender calls it a "U", Boris calls it a "C" and Nacho calls it a "D". But it really doesn't match any of the Musikraft's necks - at least not both 1st and 12th fret.

This will no doubt end in chaos, maybe even disaster ... Hee, hee!

I think that's the point - the profiles differ in very subtle ways, and that's why we have so much trouble describing them.

I can see that C necks have just a little less shoulder than D necks though. And although Warmoth's diagrams are not bad, these are better as they are real necks and they show profiles at both the 1st and 12th frets. What's that they say, a picture is worth a thousand words?

Of course, this is only Musikraft's version, and USACG's, Warmoth's, Allparts, Fender's etc are bound to differ.

It's a start though!

INdeed. Much appreciated, Kevin. Do they have even thinner C shaped necks available? I like the neck on my 1966 Esquire most of all, and it measure about 0.7" around the first fret and very slowly scales up, never reaching more than 0.9" and the join. To me, that's heavenly due to my playing style (thumb behind the neck).

I find thick necks very awkward and cumbersome. And I know opinions vary, which is why we see so many options above... I just don't see "my" option.

Cheers,
Ward

So what are you proposing, an ISO standard for guitar neck profiles?

USACG will make you a neck from .75" to .09" at the 1st fret in .01"increments. Their standard taper is .07" from the 1st to the 12th fret. But, if you talk them I'm sure they would accommodate you in any way you want.

Musikraft has 13 profiles to chose from with their "Thin D" being .75" to .81", or you can specify anything you want for an upcharge.

I'm not that sensitive to neck thicknesses. I have guitars with much larger and much smaller necks but my '73 Tele is probably the most comfortable for me and that's about .85" at the first fret.

Thanks Kevin

I can use those shots, import them into autocad and make new end pucks for my neck contour jig.

Excellent.

That's actually a very good idea, even though it isn't mine!

But until then, I'm still at everyone's disposal if they have questions about the difference between a classic "C" and a modern "C".
Maybe even between a "D" and a "U", though I'm not so sure of that anymore ...
