I recently bought a '52 RI Hot Rod - should be getting it today - my question is - if I don't like the mini-humbucker in the neck - is it easy enough to put a single coil in there? Would I just need a new pickguard? Or is the neck pup route too large?

A new guard might do it. There are also other HB's that will fit the route you could try.
Take your time and give the guitar time to find a home with you. I am not familiar with that model but I have always liked the mini-HB sounds. Post some pics if you can.

i played one of those hot rods...the mini humbucker sounds smoooooth...

sucks that you had to pay sales tax on that seeing as though your in jersey and thats where zzounds ships from...

if you dont like it it might be easier to wedge a P-90 in it...

that would be something else...
