Twang

Recently i have been diggin' a bit of johnny cash (i am usually into rock/folk) and i watched the san quentin movie. I found myself mesmerised by the style of bob wootton's playing (it's a shame there isn't more footage of him in the film) and the fab twang tone, but hold on a min... it wasn't a tele he was playin, it was a jazzmaster!

Were JM's known for their twang, or was it down to the amp? The amp looked like a super reverb.

Tell you what tho, the boom-chicka style aint as easy as it looks

It's probably as much Bob's right hand as anything else.

Fender jazzmasters and jaguars can be made to be more twangy, even annoyingly treble in tone.

Surf sounds an awful lot like twang to me... so I'd say, "Yep."

I reckon 'twang' is 50% guitar/amp and 50% technique. JMO.

I just sent a message to Bob, so hopefully he'll be willing and able to fill us in on the exacts of his equipment.

Here it is, straight from Bob's keyboard.

Clint, I played a 1967 Fender Jazzmaster with Fender strings and used a Twin Reverb amp that I still have. Hope that helps you out.
It was a good sound wasn't it? lol

Bob

He's not, I actually just sent him a message through facebook.

It would be awesome if he joined up though.

Any of those old Fender designs with a single coil bridge pickup will twang if you pick it back by the bridge. Even Luther used a Jazzmaster at various points.
