I did it. I turned to the the Dark Side.
Well actually the "Vintage Blond" Side. Yep. I finally purchased a Tele. I ordered a Squire Classic 50's Vibe today from Musicians Friend. I'd been interested in one for a while and since MF is 15% off, what the hell! Based on all the reviews I've read plus the respective threads, I can't go wrong.
Of course, I'm still and will always be a Strat guy (or hack depending on who asks) but at least I have my bases covered! It should be here the middle of next week! I can't wait!!!!

The Squier Classic Vibe 50s Telecaster is an electric guitar with a look to die for and plenty of '50s 'blackguard' Tele vibe! The Vintage Blonde over pine body totally resonates and you'll be hard-pressed to tell whether or not you are holding a premium ash body guitar! Of course pine is not a foreign wood to guitar making or to Fender history for that matter. Early single and dual pickup Esquire guitars were made with pine bodies.
Featuring a 21-fret vintage tint gloss maple neck with the modern playability of a 9.5" radius and medium jumbo frets and outfitted with a custom set of AlNiCo III single-coil pickups, this Squier Tele has tone that can really hang with the big boys. You get clear note separation even in distorted modes and dynamic response with a strong midrange and high end bite for leads! Classic Vibe! Back in 1982, the very first Squier by Fender guitars and basses came ringing out of Asia. Known for their excellent vintage-quality look, feel, sound and construction, those early Squier instruments and their Fender branded counterparts are now highly sought-after collector's items revered by guitar enthusiasts as models of "getting it right" while aiming at value-conscious players. The Squier Classic Vibe Series reflects that simultaneous commitment to excellence, value and vibe. Mirroring classic Fender designs, the Classic Vibe offering is not intended to be era or vintage correct—but rather imparting the vibe of a classic Fender design. Each with distinctive feature set combinations—all adding up to one classic looking instrument. Great sound, vintage looks, unbeatable value—Classic Vibe! Tele's breed quicky. They're so prolific they don't require a mate, and one guitar can make two (or more like ten).
The only bad part of this is that they have an insatiable appetite for money.

Welcome to the "light" side.
I just bought my CV tele yesterday and I'm completely in love. No part of me within the past 24 hours regrets my purchase. This morning I was at the hardware store picking up some slotted hardware for it (looks more vintage).... That, plus I ordered a white guard for it as well as already replacing the knobs for dome knobs.

I chucked my strat after buying a Tele and realized that I didn't play it any more. Welcome to the twangy side - we have better BBQ!

I haven't yet informed Mrs. Strat. Most likely her response will be "Oh great... you have another guitar... " Oh well!

No, I do see the Classic Vibe as the dark side.
I suppose I'm in the minority, but I have played a lot of these and they leave me with that same unsettled feeling I got from playing those Indian made Squire Vintage Modifieds. I used to be so full of disdain for many of the Korean built products - guitars dipped in heavy polyurethane. To be truthful I avoided late 70s and 1980s MIA Fenders for the same reason. Heavy heavy layers of finish just don't please the senses, I find. Maybe keeping Mamma's living room furniture wrapped in plastic covers to keep the kids from ruining it (but the kids were forbidden from sitting on it, anyway) seemed like a good idea to Mamma, but it doesn't appeal to me at all.

Thanks for sharing that, Boris. What do you recommend for a $350.00 Tele? |

I usually agree with Boris on most points, and I was skeptical about the CVs, as well. I figured how good can a $299 Fender be? Especially, when the Squiers over past 10 years or so (IMHO) haven't been anything great (although I never bought one, just played them in the stores). But, after breaking down and buying one of these CVs, I have to agree with the sentiments of most of the group members who own them. It's just a good honest Tele, that sounds terrific. What is nice about it, is it really doesn't need any upgrades. The pickups and tuners are very good, the finish on mine doesn't appear to be nearly as thick as some of the Mex production and the fretwork is some of the best I've seen on any Fender. It doesn't mean I'm planning to sell any of the favorites in my Tele collection since the CV arrived. But, if the budget's $350, I don't think you can do much better.

Keep watching this Fender Friday thing that Musicians Friend is doing. This past Friday it was the MIM Fender Blackout Tele for $ 299. There will be another - those warehouses are packed and nothing is selling BUT CV Teles. That model is "overweight" if you know what I mean. It is a good $ 225 guitar.
