Is this your first Tele?
I got a Squier Tele & Peavey Generation (nice btw) off of e-bay. I was lucky. Both were pretty nice. If you live in a large metro area you should have plenty of opportunities to get your hands on some. I highly recommend doing that. I've played a Tele now for about 7 months...If I had $400 knowing what I know now, I'd probably go for the CV. I also really like this Peavey Generation - $150 used - that leave you some cash to upgrade the pickups to exactly what you want. Also, if you don't have good amp, $400 can get you something pretty nice.

For the price range you are in check out a used G&L ASAT Tribute. Much better quality constuction, fit and finish than the MIM Fenders plus all USA pickups and hardware comes on them.
Saw one the other day on Craigslist for $325. My nephew just bought a brand new one for $499. We played a bunch of MIM Fenders and G&L ASAT Tributes and the the G&L's were the clear winner IMHO. |

Here's an update for those whom the suspense is killing. Ha.
I'm slowing down a bit, pulling off the GAS, if you will. I'm realizing that as much as I like telecasters, the typical tele-twang may not be the ideal sound for what I generally play. So I'm exploring my options still, looking to thinlines (72RI), and even other hollowbody guitars like the Sheraton. I even considered looking at [brace for impact] strats. In any case, I'm trying not to be too impulsive, exploring my options. I've been made a sweet offer on a Logan tele also... Just not sure if single coils are what I really want. If I wait I may be able to cash out a bit more as well. Any pointers based off of that? Any sheraton owners around? Or 72 reissue thinlines? The best neck I've played was that of a jag-stang selling used in GC. I thought about that, but realized that as nice as it was to play, the tone and aura of the guitar was a little too Cobain for me. |

$400 — What should I look for?
Another grand? Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Actually, the ash Tele nadzab posted looks great for $449.00. There are some impressive guitars coming out of Mexico today. Good luck in your search.

i love the cv, but don't forget that checking CL every now and again can yield some good results. i found a mim 72 custom ri for 250 that needed 50 bucks in parts so a (now) 900 dollar new guitar for a third of the price sounds like a good deal to me. depends on what you're looking for and what you come across though.

You guys are killing me. I played a CV this weekend, and wow. I'm seriously thinking about trading my 06 MIM standard in for it. I really don't need this kind of GAS right now. For less than $400 it seems like a great buy. I hope you get to try one for yourself.

What this is, is a Deluxe Nashville Tele with a better bridge and a new pickguard with no middle pup. Could be nice, see if $ 300 will buy it.
Pretty obvious to me, you're not gonna buy the Classic Vibe. I can certainly understand that. Oh, about that Melody Maker? It is fun, but it isn't a direct substitute for a good North American Tele.

Sheraton owner here-
Great guitar. While most will immediately (and correctly) say- you could not be more different than a tele, there's something there that they share- an old-school vibe- down to basics (sort of) feeling. (Really, in detail they could not be more different- humbuckers/single coil; set neck/bolt on; ornate decoration/looks good beat up; semi-hollow archtop/solid flat plank.) Your $400 will get you a nice sheraton, likely from ebay or craigslist. They play very differently, but have their distinctive allure. I don't play mine enough, but realize I can't part with it every time I do. |
