The strat pup in the middle got popular with studio musicians in Nashville who were tired of bringing a strat and a tele to a session. Or so the story goes.

Just to add, to make it as a session player in Music City you have to be versatile. The Nash Tele gives a few more options with the flick of a switch.

I'd heard that it was Brent Mason who was first (or best known) user of a Strat pickup in the middle. Of course I think he was also using some type of Gibson mini hummer in the neck.
Appartently lots of Nashville session guys followed Brent's lead. A former luthier friend of mine told me that back in those days he butchered tons of classic Telecasters to do the 'Brent Mason' mod.

Shame that Fender couldn't work something out with Brent and it would have been a 'Brent Mason' model.

I'm sure that Blue Water Girl could fill in lots of details.

Folks started using the middle Strat add on in mid-late '70s.
I had mine added in '74 and a local guy made me a 5 way switch
from a 3-way. There weren't any available over the counter then
and Fender did not have any until '76(?) on factory Strats.

I hadn't seen or heard anyone with it then other than the guy who did
mine. Main thing is it worked and sounded really good.
I got the used pickup at the Sho-Bud store on Lower Broad.
It was pretty old.

I actually wanted to add the 3rd pickup before I moved to
Nashville but just never got to it in finding someone to do it
proper. That and finding a loose Strat pickup then wasn't
easy. There wasn't any AM pickups available until later on.

I'm glad they made it in Ensenada & called it the Nashville. Cause if they called it a Brent Mason, I would have payed a LOT more then the $500 I paid a couple of years ago...no?

It may be a Squier, but I always thought these were pretty much due to Brent's configuration...

Was Brent Mason the first guy to do this mod? I believe I've seen pictures of guys like Reggie Young with modified three-pickup teles, and didn't Jerry Donohue plays one, or used to?

Well, maybe I'm daft, but to me, if someone is paying me double or triple scale, I'd be glad to lug both a Strat and a Tele around!

Heard all this talk about Brent Mason these days. Who else is on the "A" list for sessions in Nashville these days? I'd imagine Ray Flacke, and Johnny Hiland, but who else?

Do a search in the Bad Dog Cafe on that topic. Blue Water Girl discussed the A list with some other members not more than a month or 6 weeks ago.

Yes I've seen that one and can't get past the headstock - but that's just me.
I was only saying that it is a shame that Fender couldn't have worked something out with Brent.

not unless he did it before 1973, which is when i did my first one! of course, he would've been about 14 then, so i ain't ruling it out.

I would suspect it was Joe Glaser that got that started for Nashville players. He was certainly responsible for Brent's guitar and I believe he made this one too. Here is Rick Skaggs with his.

I heard Joe had a box full of those flaming necks. I always wanted to build one like Ricky's purple Tele.
