It was a stock MIM '08. The original neck pickup was what drew me to the sound of the tele at first actually.. then i found the "twang" from the bridge and was hooked.. haha. The sound now is out of this world. Makes me reconsider buying a new amp because my old one sounds so good with these. I'm sure a better amp (since my main amp right now is just a Valve Jr half stack) would sound ridiculously better but I'll get to it eventually.
The Vintage+ are punchy in all the right places. The neck is the best I've ever heard IMO out of any guitar period. Reminds me a bit of a strat neck but still retains a bit of that Tele-ness. I believe it was actually modeled after a P90 sound? The "normal" middle position is also exceptional, with just the right amount of jangle and awesome low end for everything from chordal work to funk. Then there's the bridge. Very different from a traditional Tele sound because it's so much more aggressive, but I like it nontheless. There's still some twang in there, just the low end now rocks more than it did and the high end is smoothed out a bit. The "humbucking" position (position 4) is kinda closer to the veiled neck sound with the stock neck pickups actually, and very smooth sounding with a lot of low end and a much higher output. Sounds good with distortion but not as much clean to my ears.
Overall, I'd say it was well worth the 5 1/2 hours of wiring and rewiring again cuz I messed up the first time and drilling into the body to mount the neck pickup and setting it all back up again. It's like another guitar. I can't put it down (not that I could before the transformation, but it's worse now).
Oh, and with just the right lighting, since the neck pickup is black, it looks like an Esquire which is pretty damn cool I think.
