The Telecaster and Soul Music

I just love the way the Telecaster was used in southern 60's soul music.

Check out this Soul Train live performance by Wilson Picket, doing the old Bobby Womack tune "I'm In Love". Cool Tele, awesome player.

Anyone know who he is? A guy in the comments calls him Liston.

Indeed.

Also televised over here a few weeks ago was a fabulous documentary about Motown's Funk Brothers. Fascinating stuff and was pleased to see that one of the guitarists, sorry can't remember his name, played a Tele. His guitar had a Jazz/Jag or 70's style neck/head.
Always loved the guitar sounds they got.

My Mum had an old vinyl compilation record called Black Magic back in the 70s with all those old Steve Cropper tunes on. Some great stuff!

Saint,

It’s funny you should post that video on the day Bobby Womack
is inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame.

What color is that Tele? Is that Firemist Gold like this?

It is stuff like this that made me pick up a telecaster. Here in the UK we do not have any country music so it was through Soul and Blues mostly I learned to love the Telecaster sound. Even though I have lately tried to expand my knowledge of country and rockabilly (I do love rockabilly a lot now.) Its still stuff like Booker T and the MGs that draws me back.

BEST CLIP EVER!

Hello,

I am not sure about it but the guitarplayer could be Cornell Dupree.

Greetings, Klaus

Hey Klaus, you nailed it. It's a young Cornell Dupree. Here he is a few years later with King Curtis.

Thanks Chip, yes that's the guy and a good photo of THAT Tele.

Just one thing puzzles me though. On the various pieces of footage in this documentary, his Tele had a humbucker in the neck position.

Way kewl to see Bernard Purdie as a young man. He did some amazing stuff with Steely Dan(Peg) on the Aja album later in his carrer.

Cornell Dupree also played guitar on Brook Benton's version of "Rainy Night In Georgia". It is one of my all time favorite guitar songs.
BTW, pay no attention to the video, it has nothing to do with the song as far as I can tell.

Man, do I love that song. I was scouring youtube as a result of this thread and discovered one of my favorite versions, along with lots of other Brooke Benton stuff.

Check this one out, if you dare and note the guitar work as well:

I'm with you on this one, no way is that Cornell Dupree. The guy in the Wilson Pickett clip is quite a bit heavier, and I'm pretty sure Dupree went straight from a Guild Starfire to the later 50's blonde tele, which he played for quite a while after.

edit: this link has a line about Ward playing with Wilson Pickett, not much, but it's something. http://themusicsover.wordpress.com/2...5/robert-ward/

Re Cornell's pick up

I have a book by Cornell in where he comments on his equipment.
King Curtis was always telling him to change guitars.

Some quotes re his tele

"Around 1969-70 I changed to Fender and the notes and chords were clearer. The first Fender I owned was a Telecaster.

"On my particular telecaster , I had added a DeArmond pickup in the center position that I had removed from my Guild Starfire."

It didn't mention the neck pickup though.

In around 1977 Yamaha built some copies for him which he endorsed. It has a humbucker in the neck position.

Yeah, I think I have the same book. You can see the added middle pickup on the "Stuff - Live at Montreux" videos on youtube. Great stuff. Sorry to get off topic here!

The more I look, I agree it's not Cornell Dupree. Can't find out much about Robert Ward though.

Whoever it is is doing a masterful job of covering both the guitar parts from the record. If you listen to the original recording by Wilson Picket, there's the main part (the part Jim Weider demonstrates in the video mentioned above) and a second guitar doing the freestyle licks. This guy is kind of combining both parts for the live version. Just Killer.

I think the Tele player in the original post video asking is Tippy Amstrong.

Hm, last time I looked, Tippy Armstrong was white .....

My guess is Robert Ward, though it seems to lack his famous tremolo.

That sure doesn't look like Cornell DuPree or any picture I've ever seen of Robert Ward either.

Here's a pic of the Ohio Untouchables and a later pic of Robert, from the 90's.

Also Robert dropped out of sight for about 25 years, and I think that video would have been during that time, but maybe it was before. Good call of Robert as a Tele player in soul music though!

Cornell Dupree makes "The Edge" laughable

Looking over the Cornell Dupree videos I am totally amazed at his style.
He has a thing going that is like almost no technique and all feel.
Every phrase sounds like a spur of the moment thought.
And he almost doesn't make it.
It drives me wild.
And I have to mention he and Richard Tee together are about as good as it gets re:The Funky, Jazzy, Bluesy, Groovy. WOW!

Will Lee looks like he is in Heaven.

I got the bug to track it down, and found a lot of guys who it isn't, but I did come up with this interesting bit of info, the guitar players on the studio album I'm In Love are Bobby Womack and (drum roll) Reggie Young.

Yes, I know that's not Reggie in the video. Did I catch a fleeting glimpse of Joey The Lips Fagan on trumpet, though?
