Jazz on Tele
Hi,
did you already use your Tele for playing Jazz ? How do you get the classical mellow jazz sound on a Tele say of Jimmy Raney ? Any mods concerning bodies, strings, bridge or pick-ups ? I would appreciate sharing your experience. Best regards

yes, i have a setting on my amp that flattens the mids and gives a very clean tone. i just have to set the tone control down, add some reverb (maybe some delay) and jazz away.
it's the bill frisell way. |

this is how i do it: 2 amps, boost it with an aC and an RC Booster when I want a stronger signal with more grit and bite, back off the volume knob is the key to getting a nice clean jazz tone, while driving the amp a little hotter.
Also have the TC Electronic Gmajor for some subtle delay effects, back off the treble on the amp and you got a nice lush Metheny tone. I also run the tone on the Tele about half way to get more off an ol'school jazz tone, but backing it off too much will be too muddy. I'm looking to get some hotter pick ups but still retain that Tele spank. http://www.tdpri.com/forum/images/attach/jpg.gif |

i do almost all my amplified jazz playing on my teles. aside from the previous good advice, i'll reccomend flatwound strings and a nice heavy pick that doesn't have that much "click" to it's attack (i like dunlop jazztone 204's and 205's)
A classic jazz tone like raney's (excellent taste man!) is partially a product of an archtop guitar, but you can get an approximation on a tele. as said before, neck pickup, some tone rolled off (i sort of "tune" my guitar to every room i play in, so I can't give you an exact as to how much to roll off--i usually roll it off until things sound too muddy, then bring it back up until my attack is soft but noticable) boost the midrange on your amp, and bring the highs down a bit too for that classic jazz tone. bass is always to taste, and again depends on the room. I've heard some folks try to get a jazz tone by just removing all highs and cranking the bass--yikes! that sounds horrible usually! to me, it's all about the midrange.
