when tuners suddenly die? . . .

why would this happen? i was doing some work on my tele yesterday, got her all strung back up after words and then: my high e-string won't stay in tune for more than 3 seconds and then it promptly detunes a whole step.

what gives?

do i need a new tuning machine, or am i missing something?

What type of tuners are you using?

If they are the "modern" hole-in-the-post type, it could be that you have not fitted the string correctly, causing it to slip as you tighten up the string.

Been there, got the tee-shirt!....

In fact, that's why I have fitted the "split-post" type tuners on as many of my Teles as possible - so much easier and more reliable!

they came stock on my highway one texas. i think folks call them vintage style gotohs or something? you shove the string about an inch down in a little hole, then wind the string around the shaft. i've tried 3 strings to the same avail, and never had this problem before?

Hmmmm.... that sounds very unusual - the split post tuners are normally SO reliable...

I take it that this guitar is not very old?

It could be that the winding gear/cog has failed, but generally that only tends to happen on cheapo copies (and usually after a number of years).

You could try taking off the rogue tuner (just two small screws hold it in place), and then gently remove the casing covering the gears (from memory you just need to bend back two metal tabs) and see what's happening inside.

I know this must sound less than helpful, but without being able to actually see exactly what is happening, it is hard to offer a solution to whatever the problem may be!

Do you have a decent tech in your area?

I have had strings unwind at the ball end on occasion. Pretty rare, but it has happened.

yeah, maybe i'll go stop by today. it's weird, because these tuners rule. i've never had a problem with them. this guitar is like 2 years old. and it wasn't a steady decline, it's like it went from working to not in 5 minutes.
