'62 RI Thin Skins
Hi all,
I traded a '62 RI tele a while back and really miss it. I have a new AM STD that I am thinking of trading in for a '62 RI Thin Skin. Does anyone have any experience with these? How do they compare to the regular '62 RI? I know bout the the difference in radius and fret size, and I like the 9.5 radius, I'm not sure about the 6105 frets. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks. cez |

I like mine so much that i've bought another one ('55 Tele - should be here soon...
![]() fret size is a personal thing. 6105's will probably feel the same as your AM STD and not as the '62 RI you had (with small vintage frets). Thinskins also come with Custom Shop pickups and nitro finish (obviously). they are so well built that it feels like you're playing a CS. i say: DO IT! |

That is a very fine looking guitar!
I think I can live with the larger frets (med Jumbos are fine with me as well), but I like the neck shape of the '62 RI more than the Am STDs. udister - is that an alder or ash body? |

Does anyone know if the ash sounds a lot different than the alder? I'm really interested in the white/blond finished ones from either Wildwood's or Dave's. Is there a bigg difference between these woods?

Thin Skin Reissues
Hey Cez1,
I don't have any experience with the '62 reissue, but I do have the '52 Reissue Tele Thin skin (as well as a '54 Reissue Strat). Same basic idea...thin nitro finish, Ash body, 9.5" Radius. Anyway, I got mine about 2 years ago from Music Machine up in Washington State, and can say that it is definitely my favorite guitar. The fit and finish on these are very, very good. Most importantly, they play and sound fantastic! I have a Custom Shop Fender strat, and my Thin Skin reissue sounds and plays every bit as good. I think they are a great value for what you get. My guess is that if you buy one, you won't be dissapointed! |

I have a Thin Skin 62 Tele Custom RI I bought from Music Machine and it is outstanding, the tone on it is the best I've heard from a Tele (or any electric, for that matter). I highly recommend these Thin Skins, Dave's Guitars is saying there will not be a run for 2009 so if you don't get yours now you may be waiting a long time.

The body is not routed for a neck humbucker, but I would recommend giving the stock pickups a try first--this is one of the major differences between the stock '62RI and the thinskin version. The thinskin pickups are MUCH better balanced between the bridge and neck. I love the neck pickup on mine.

I'm sold!! Need to dump some gear and I hope to place an order this weekend. I think I'll be going with the Ash/Blond combo from either Dave's or Wildwood. The other colours are nice (udister, that sunburst is awesome), but I like the idea of Ash and Rosewood.
Thanks to all for your answers, and please more pics!!!! |
