Mason on Johnny Cash Tribute

Just saw the tribute to JC on CMT, some very nice tele work by Brent. How many guys are going to forget to give their tele a "haircut" after they see this show Anybody know who the drummer was, he sounded great along with all the other players. Also, Brooks and Dunn played the song "Jackson", a very nice rendition, although I missed half of it, guess I'll have to wait for it to come on again. 8)

I just caught

the last half too. I wondered if that was Brent back there with the messy guitar :) . Definitely some great playing all around by a very tight backup band even though I can do without some of the "stars". I've never been a big fan of either Willie or Kris but they've written some great songs. I'd also forgotten how much I liked Roseannes voice so I should add her to the other list along with whichever of Brooks and Dunne does the lead vocals, man he has a good voice. What exactly does the other guy do? I've often sen him sporting a fancy LP but never reallly heard him play it. Saw the Crossroads show with them and ZZ Top which was great but Billie G carried all the guitar work.

I caught part of it too....

I came in when Kid Rock was doing "What Is Truth?" and fell asleep shortly after Willie doing "Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)?" I liked what I saw and heard. I wish I would've caught Hank on the show though.

I did see something though that piqued my interest and raised a question. There was a camera shot from the end of Brent's guitar while he was playing. It was a great shot by the way. It was kind of from the front tail end of his Tele with the shot showing most of the way up the neck. With the brightness from one of the lights coming down from behind (and to his left) towards the camera lens, it reminded me of the cover shot of Johnny Cash at San Quentin.

In case Brent or Julie reads this, the question it raised is this. Brent, what guage strings do you use? The low "E" string looked as big around as my arm. Of course that ain't saying much, I've got really small arms, but still...

My low "E" looks about like Brent's "D" string. I been using Fender 9 - 40's lately, by the way. For all I know my eyes may have been playing tricks on me, but the stings actually took my attention away from the rest of the camera shot.

I know my question isn't a really important one, but like I said, it just popped into my head.

Joel

p.s
I've been sitting here at the comp since 5 am, and it's now 7 am. The tv's been on CMT the whole time. Please don't take this as a "cheap shot" against Brent in anyway, because it's certainly not meant that way. What happened to country music?? Where is it?? There sure as hell doesn't seem to be much of it on CMT. I'm not saying the music on the radio and CMT is bad. And I don't mean to start any kind of "music has to evolve" war either. Music has to grow, I know. However, a tree can't grow if it's removed from it's roots.
Just my free opinion......that no one asked for.

Cool, I caught part of it and was wondering who the guitarist playing the telecaster was. I know I've heard Brent Masons all over the place but never actually saw him (that I know of). While not a big country fan it was nice seeing some of the people I hear mentioned on here perform, and the one performer I liked the best and thought I could remember his name (at least til this morning!) to check out his music I have already forgotten, is there someplace that has a set list performed ?

I was waiting for some mean Tele licks. When Hank and Kid Rock came on i noticed Brent cut loose a bit.I thought Sheryl Crow did a good job with Hurt.Ive been a Johnny Cash fan forever and i got to say i'm sorry he's gone.Just wish i got to see him.
I wonder if Brent hobnobs with Willie and the boys after a show like that?Or does everyone skidaddle right after they are done?

Michael....

Can you remember the song or any of the lyrics? If so, one of us should be able to figure out what song it was, and then in turn be able to tell you who sang it.

Thanks Joel, it's one of those frustrating things right now (on the tip of my tongue type thing), I actually had heard the performers name before as well as the song, not that this is much help but he was playing an acoustic guitar, kind of middle aged, and shortish black curly hair... big help I know ! :) . I'm not gonna think about it cuz it's getting me nowhere and just wait for it to hit me at 3 am.

Brent on CMT

I turned the channel to cmt and i always look for the guitar player when a live band is playing and yes in the back with his primer cigarette smoke filled gray tele was my hero Brent Mason, nothing against Jonny Cash, "i think i spelled that right" but i wasnt interested in the Cash tribute or the stars there, i was just listening for those hot tele licks from the man in the back holding the primer gray tele, he is the coolest guy there, why dont one of those stars introduce the man at least once, after all he has more talent than any of the stars there , a lot of people can sing but how many people can play music like the cool guy from Ohio, Brent Mason

I know that feeling. Given what you've said above though, the first 2 people that come to mind are Randy Scruggs or Larry Gatlin (even though Larry has more of a 'salt and pepper' look if I remember correctly )

Of course, I didn't see all the show. Therefore there may have been other performers that were on that fit your description. If it hits you at 3 am.....let me know.

Does that mean it's 3 am already?!?! Oh s#@t!!! I missed my gig!!!

No problem Michael. Glad I could actually "contribute" something to this board. (even it wasn't guitar related)

I also liked Sheryl Crow on "Hurt", did you catch her when she was playing the accordian for one of Johnny's son in laws? I think his name is Jim Tittle, not sure though, but he had a great voice no doubt.

I have not seen the show yet, but at first guess I would say maybe Harry Stinson. Harry is a great drummer/harmony vocalist that stays pretty busy in N'town. I believe Brent also played with Harry on the old American Music Shop and some other shows.

No one mentioned Bros. Travis or Marty yet ?!

Geesh, I got goose bumps listening to Travis sing "I Walk the Line" with Marty adding some tasty tele work. Then Marty doing "Hey Porter", another great tune.

And my favs Kix and Ronnie with Carlene Carter on "Jackson"...great version. And to answer the question about Kix and his fancy Les Pauls...while Ronnie is a vocal giant, Kix is a pinball of entertainment with his stage antics and does some nice vocals too...together they are pure entertainment in a rockin' honky tonk vein.

Finally, Rosanne Cash...a velvet voice, rich, smooth and full of emotion, she was stellar and considering the reason she was there, she held it together very nicely.

Great playing Mr. Mason.

Just a little correction: John Mellencamp performed "Hey Porter" right after Travis Tritt's song.......Marty & the FS did "Rock Island Line" later in the show.

I recorded the original airing on 15 Nov 03........I watch bits and pieces about every week. One of my fav parts in Rodney Crowell's story about "being summoned" to see John after he and Rosane had been living together...

I was watching but did not catch Eddie Bayers, unless he changed his look, I probably seen the shots of Harry whenever they showed the drummer, anyhoo Brent sounded great! I wish there where more programs of this nature to catch the top players in Nashville, living in ND, you really don't get a chance to see alot of that stuff. Some of you guys are real lucky that you live in the Nashville, Branson, or Austin areas. I guess it doesn't matter where you hear good music but its always nice to see the pros go at it. Although, I caught a show by Alan Jackson last week. 8)

You must be joking. Guitar players are a dime a dozen. Not everyone can WRITE SONGS like Kristofferson or Willie or Johnny or Waylon or (fill in the blank). When they're gone, there'll never be anyone else like them again. There will always be more guitar players.

Thank you blue water girl. As I said in my previous post, it was just something that struck me when I saw the camera shot.
