Taking a Strat headstock and cutting a tele headstock?

I was just curious...could you conceivably take a Strat headstock and cut a tele headstock out of it? Is it possible???

I feel like the buldge on the tele is in the middle of the taper of the strat's so you could make something similar, but not an exact copy. (This is just my assumption from looking at a picture of a tele headstock and strat headstock just now on google)

hugo, just overlay one of your tele headstocks over that Deluxe tele headstock and eyeball it. If you have wood in all the right places you are on your way...

I believe I've seen paper cutouts overlaid showing that it will work.

Cutting a tele headstock from a strat depends very much on what version of a tele headstock you're shooting for. There is enough variance in the tele shape from vintage to modern that it might work for the version you want.

I looked into this and tele from strat doesn't work. The curvature of the ball from the high e tuner on a strat doesn't leave enough wood to make an accurate compound curve that is the ball on the tele headstock. YMMV.

Carbonti, thanks for the info. I wasn't sure but thought it might be worth a try. I would have just checked my guitars myself but some guitars are with me and others are at my home. My home is being reno'd and the wife and I are renting another house until done. Thanks alot for all the help guys. It is fun trying to be creative with guitars isn't it?

You should be able to come pretty close. Here's a Telecaster headstock overlaid on a Classic Stratocaster headstock done with Photoshop. You would probably have plenty of wood on one of those big goofy Tele Deluxe or Squier Strat headstocks.

Cool. So, you're calling my tele deluxe goofy?????
You know what, to be honest I loved it at first but now I hate it. I won't ruin a fender deluxe but I will ruin a squier deluxe. Yes, I'm a fender snob even though I love my squier CV.
Can I ask a question, what does it mean if my Tele Deluxe is a Limited Edition? I mean I can't find any info on this guitar at all regarding the limited edition part. Any ideas, jwells393?? Just razzin ya about the "goofy headstock" thang.

I looked into tele from strat after working around the paucity of wood on a USACG t-style headstock to shape into a clone tele headstock. I didn't want to be in the same situation with the next tele neck project so I investigated other options.

jwells photoshop illustration is exactly why IMO close isn't good enough. There simply isn't enough wood to shape a tele headstock. The tele overlay runs off the strat headstock by the "synchronized" portion of the strat decal. If there isn't enough wood to shape, to work around that shortfall means all the other french curve radii have to be adjusted to fit within the amount of wood you've got. It ends up not looking right.

Short answer that works: Use largest CBS-era Strat headstock shape to make a thin 1948 vintage tele headstock shape.

If there's not enough wood for a proper reshape there's always the headstock transplant.

jwells393, dude is there anything you can't do when it comes to guitars?? I have seen your builds in the past and read your posts. You do know your sh*t don't you! Thanks for the help. I will probably just get a new neck. No tools for that kind of work. Wow, where did you learn how to do all this stuff? Seriously?

A tip of the hat to jwells...skills that make any guitar project solvable and trivial at the same time. Stuff like that points out the chasm between being a craftsman and a consumer. Salud.

I repeat what the above posters say. I've been very impressed by the way you come up with ideas and build the instruments presented in your threads.

You're good Jack!

I would not even pretend to answer for Jack but I suspect that he has learned mostly from experience and even more from his mistakes. Such is the nature guitar making.

Not the best shot to see the headstock, but I was able to get pretty close:

I used the paper cut out method...

ddhr, it looks damn close from jwells pics anyway. I may just try drawing on it to see how close it is. I mean if we're talking 1/16th then it might just pass. On the other hand, I am quite picky about things being exact so.... that looks like you did an awesome job though.
