Kiss on a telecaster?

Possible?

Listening to Hotter than Hell and was wondering if you could dial these tones on a tele without getting something like a hot coils?

Short answer: No man, you need humbuckers.

I've been trying to get strats out of teles, teles out of strats, LP's out of strats, well you get the idea, for a while.

The best tool for the job, as it ever was, is just that. Forget approximations of anything & everything, you'll save time in the long run. $.02, YMMV, all that good PC stuff.

You know, I can cop a pretty decent early Kiss sound...

with a Tele and a BOSS OD-3 Over Drive, believe it or not! (Ah, there's nothing like early Kiss! Classics!)

Plus, Ace was known to wield a Tele, Esquire, or Strat on the occasional studio cut with Kiss.

Yes, Ace would double rhythm parts on a Strat or Tele. Never on leads though. The dominant tone is still the Les Paul.

I think you could do Paul Stanley's parts on a tele. His sound was always a little thinner to my ears. Paul's a highly underrated rhythm guitar player IMHO.

I agree--you could get Paul's parts across with a Tele. And Paul is indeed a fantastic rhythm guitarist. I love the way Ace's and Paul's parts are arranged to complement each other, especially on the first few albums. You can definitely tell they took time to work out their individual parts (Gene did too, really) in order to get an overall synergistic sound.

The first song I ever learned to pick out on a guitar was "Firehouse."

Kiss and Tele's

Hey, I love Kiss as much as I love Teles, but...
I prefer to keep them seperate.

The typical Kiss tone is that of a bridge bucker, Dimarzio Super Distortion for the lead, and Super II for Pauls sound, all through a Marshall stack. Plain and simple, and Kiss has always been honest in its music.

In fact, they are the reason I still keep a dual-bucker Ibanez SG copy around the house, just in case the urge to play Black Diamond or Rock'n'Roll all Night arises .

Well, any solid body guitar shape can be made to sound like any other solid body guitar shape. At a certain abstract point you just have to use the right woods and hardware and there you go. So you can make a Tele that is suitable for all sorts of things. You could do the same thing with a Les Paul. Yank the stop tail piece and tune-o-matic bridge and slap in a Tele bridge and pickup and you'll start twanging.

However, no way does a stock Tele get anything close to a humbucker or P-90 tone. You can use pedals and other stuff to get close but it will never be the same.

    Later Kiss cuts

Maybe strange for me to put this up, but on "Hot in the shade" and most notably on "Rise to it" Paul is clearly heard playing a Tele.

That twang he's heard using can only come from one guitar.

And although you probably can't call it a "Proper" Tele I have seen live pictures of Bruce Kulick playing a tele shaped ESP with Twin Humbuckers and a floyd.

Don't get me wrong "Alive"is my favorite Kiss record and "let me go rock and Roll"my favorite cut from that record but it's not fair that later Kiss members like Eric Carr, Vinny Vincent, Mark St.John, Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer are largely ignored since they weren't the original four guys.

I think it's a fitting tribute that on their Current tour Kiss plays material from their non-make up days, Peter Criss actually is able to do the famous thunder of Eric Carr's drumming on "I love it loud", from what I read Peter thinks that it would be doing Eric injustice to hold back when playing that one live.

I had my doubts about Tommy Thayer but he's holding his own doing Ace frehley Justice by wearing his make up while also being able to play the solos that Vinny, Mark and Bruce played, he's a great all round Kiss guitarist.

    Kiss, honest in their music???

Not according to Gene Simmons. Per Gene, Ace barely played at all on the "Destroyer" album, either Bob Ezrin himself or some session player (Dick Wagner?) played most of the lead parts. Apparently Ace was pretty into partying by that point.

That said, I do like a lot of Kiss' songs!

Not a major feat in my opinion. I like Kiss and Ace fine, but Frehley is no genius on guitar by any means.

You may not be able to cop the exact Kiss tone with a Tele, but I bet it would sound pretty cool anyway. Anyhow, the original tone has already been done. Why not give an old song a new twist?[/u]

Yep, it was Dick Wagner but he only played on Sweet Pain. Later on, Peter was replaced by Anton Fig on almost the entire Dynasty album. Peter only drummed on his song, Dirty Livin'.

I like Gene but there are quite a few things he says that I would take with a large pinch of salt somedays. He seems to have rather selective memory.

    Valid point.

Did Dick Wagner play for Alice Cooper during a good part of his career?

Dick Wagner not only played with Alice, he played with Lou Reed too. Check out Lou's Rock 'n' Roll Animal record to hear Dick at his best. Great record, great guitar playing.

Oh, alright! I was thinking more of Kiss when playing live!
My main source of information was the Guitar Player interview in 1979 wich featured all the bands members. Paul basically said that when you come to see Kiss, you get straight-out rock'n'roll with no frills covering up the sound. (They sure make up for the frills in the visual part though.) Their solo-albums, on the other hand, were venues for experimentation and Ace clearly said that he used a Tele on one of the cuts. But the pure Kiss studio albums were never discussed in the public until recently when Gene Simmons wrote his books.

One more interesting thing about Kiss:
Has anybody ever seen Gene Simmons using a Fender Bass? I think he is one of the few bassists who never played a Fender. I know they had a deal with Gibson in the 70's but still?

Vladimir, according to several interviews with Gene, he used a Fender Precision briefly (with Bullfrog Bheer, I think...maybe very early Wicked Lester?), but never used them again simply because he didn't like the way Fender's characteristic asymmetrical double cutaways looked. Gene only likes and uses basses with symmetrical double cutaways. Strange, but apparently true.
