Anyone Actually Know How the "Relic" Job is Done on the Joe Strummer Teles?
I was at a local music store today where a friend of mine works and they have a couple of the Joe Strummer Teles. I told him that I had read here on the boards that the relic job is actually some kind of wrap or something but after looking at both of them, although they are very similar, they're not identical. So, what's the deal on these things? I think they have a terrible looking (and feeling) relic job on them but does anyone have the actual scoop on how they do these mass produced relic jobs? I thought too that it might be some sort of overlay but after inspecting two of them side by side I dont think that's the case... Anyone have any ideas or, better yet, know for sure how they're done?

i think they just have a picture on the assembly line where the relic jobs are done and tell the employees to make it look as close to the pic as possible. i have played 3 of them now and they are all a bit different in the relic job, but all close in looks at the same time.

My unfiltered response to that question is "very poorly." After seeing a couple of them in person, I have to say I think that's the fugliest guitar I've ever seen besides the junk-chic Tiescos, etc.

No, if they did them that way, they'd look better.
Ive heard folks here saying that it's some sort of wrap or that they use a kind of stenciling template or something... just trying to figure out what the deal is (in other words, Id like to find out how much effort it takes and what technique is used to make a guitar look so bad...) The necks do feel decent though...

The Strummer Tele causes me all sorts of issues. I'm a Clash fan, always have been and just don't think that it's the kind of thing Joe would have approved of.
As for the job they have done - I don't think they should have released it as a relic, I know it would have just been a black Classic '60s with a few stickers but, hey thats just my opinion. I feel sure Joe would have said "play the bloody thing and relic it yourself, as long as you say something with it"

I have no idea what "Joe Would Say". I take the guitar as a guitar, not a philosophy. From the couple I've seen, looks like a belt sander and a matte poly finish to hold it all in place.
I enjoyed the feel of the guitar and preferred the look of the Strummer Tele to the jelly beam colored guitars next to it for sale at GC. I've seen them used from $550 to $700, seems like a good deal to me. |

I don't care what Joe would say, I Love em. own one and gig it all the time. Might pick up a few more over time, just cause I like them. Trust me, over time tey will get "worn in". They play well, and feel great. BTW, I love the Clash and JS, but he'd tell you his opinon doesn't matter, do what you want. I know that sounds silly to some but it is just as silly as folks saying he would lose his mind over these too, we don't know, he isn't around to tell us.

if i was in the market for another tele, i'd totally get one and give it a crappy, homegrown body refin. i think that would look great, and be most in-line w/ some sort of strummer philosophy.

Just think of it this way. If Merle or Waylon would have been born in Turkey and raised in England during the 60's then BOOM! ya got Joe Strummer.
