need a guitar for slide - standard tele or strat?

I'm looking for an inexpensive (-350) guitar to dedicate to slide playing (heavy strings, tuned to g or d) and have been trying to decide between an MIM strat or tele for the purpose.

Any thoughts?

i'd go tele. only reason i can see to use a strat is... the whammy bar? i guess...
tele's are simpler and thus better imo

I took Ry Cooder's advice and got a Strat...

I know, I know - I still bleed Tele, but a Strat with a trem has this sort of nasal quality that I find wonderful for slide, yet annoying for most everything else. To me, the analogy would be that (for slide) a Strat is to a Tele, what a Tri-cone Resonator is to a D-28.
Call me nuts, but heavy strings on a Strat cranked through a tweed amp just starting to break up is just the felines' posterior!
JMHO...

P.S. I've also been seen slidin' on a Danelectro DC-59...Woohoo!

Only you can make this call. It depends on whether you like a strat or tele's tone better. Personally, I think that t tone is fuller troughout the whole range on a tele, more bite on the top end when you need it, more beef in the middle, and tighter in the bottom, which I think is perfect for open G. The low end can get kind of flabby when you tune down.

Ry Cooder, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and many others all get great slide tone on strats. Muddy played slide on a tele, and he's actually the only big name I can think of right now :-) Oh, Rich Robinson from the Black Crowes too.

Generally speaking, I'm a tele player and my main guitar is a 52RI, but as others have said, there are plenty of good examples of slide tone on strats. Perhaps I'll just go to GC and find the best MIM guitar--be it a strat or tele--and take it from there.

I'll report back...

I'll complicate this one...

Lowell George played a 70's Strat with a Tele bridge pickup.

Hee hee...

Either way, get heavy strings, action set high.
