nuts and string spread

how do you measure string spread?

Is this it?

I use a caliper and clamp it on either side of the E-strings. My Strat for examples measures 41 mm at the nut and string spacing is 36 mm.
For laying out the strings you can use a template from StewMac (or copy them with a piece of paper from another axe, although I have never done it that way).

sort of. theres a preslotted nut i can buy from stew-mac but it says the string spread is 1 and 5/8 (i think) whats that mean?
