I bought a Tribute by G&L ASAT Classic about a month ago. The quality is comparable to a MIM Fender standard Tele, which means that if you buy one, you should inspect it carefully. For instance, the bridge on mine was crooked (I don't see this problem on Fenders, although many standard Fenders have crooked necks). The dealer switched the neck to a different body that had a straighter bridge.
My opinion? If I had to do it over, I'd buy a MIM Fender. But I think this is a matter of taste. The G&L is a solid guitar; it just lacks something for me. |

Ya know. You could remove the decal
and add a Fender one...like Fuzzy's photo above...
It would look kinda cool. I actually played a bunch of G&L's today at a friend's small shop. Very nice! I was ready to buy one...seriously.

Made to compete with foreign market products..............
.......................and doing pretty well, we are told.
I participate on the G&L website a lot and there has been considerable talk about the Tribute line. There was a lot of debate before it's debut and more debate since it's release. The concensus is: pretty good guitars that are a good value for the dollars spent. They are intended to compete with the foreign market products from Fender and other makers and are gaining a market. The bodies and necks are made in Korea for G&L and under their direction. The pickups are manufactured in Fullerton, California by regular G&L workers. The rest of the needed items are purchused as needed. The guitars are then assembled in Fullerton and shipped to dealers from there. This past summer, while attending my son's Marine Corps Boot Camp Graduation, we toured the G&L Factory and saw the assembly of these guitars and looked at several. Not bad guitars for the money. Certainly a nice entry level type guitar. At this point in time I don't own any and have no plans to buy one. Take care. Emmitt O.

I'd love to pick one up used - wait a little bit and they should start hitting the classifieds more often, for good prices. Figure $450 new equals $350 used, or less? That's sounds like a good deal to me!
I wouldn't pay $450 for a new one however, when I can usually get used American ones in VG condition for just a little above that.
