Lucinda's guitarists, anyone familiar?

Just remembered that I had been meaning to ask this one.

Is anyone familiar with the guitarists in Lucinda Williams' Band? I particularly dig what they do as a team.

If you haven't seen the "sessions at w. 54th" with them, you're missing a good one (I've actually only seen part of it).

The guitarist on that video playing an Albert Lee model geet has a cool vibe about him when he plays (up high on his tummy with his crazy mop-top head-bouncing).

Heh.

Thanks for anyone who know this or where to get more info...

My head feels like Gazoo today...

David

Man do I ever love her

I had to retire "Car Wheels" for sanity's sake, I just played it over and over.
Only caught one show, 4 or so years ago at HOB NOLA.
Mop top guy (Pettibone?) played a Vaccaro or some such
space age looking thing most of the night.
It is however, a little blurry that memory...
mustbe something in the water they make the ice from.

Kenny Vaughn and John Jackson were with Lucinda during her stop in Toronto on the "Car Wheels" tour. That was a dynamite show.

Old Stuff

On her older albums wasn't Gurf Morlix playing Tele for her? Or did he just play bass and do some co-writing/arranging?

Specific Info???

My old buddy Taras was the bass player on her tour last year. He and Jim Christie are from D. Yoakums band. If you have a specific question I could ask him if he can get details... like about gear I'm assuming.

He played a lot of the guitar on a couple of her records but now he has a solo career. That guy is amazing.

It's Doug Pettibone playing with her.
I saw her play in the fall. He about played a different guitar for every song. He played A LOT of guitar solos. I was sick of hearing them by the end of the night and seems to be tired of playing them. He played some really cool pedal steel on one song. I wish he would have done more than that.

Lucinda

Kenny Vaughn is the guy with the Albert Lee Model guitar.
And don't forget Buddy Miller is all over Car Wheels...

I think my favorite is Gurf though. Lucinda never sounded better than on the Sweet Old World CD IMO

Jim Christie is great! Ask your buddy Taras if Lucinda is a sucker for tall, skinny bass players. If she is I'm going on a diet.

Bo Ramsey was with her when I saw her at Gruene Hall. I think this was just as her Essence album was being released. Here's a pic of Bo who also played a Strat and old Dano U1 for slide that nite. Man, he is damn good and put out a nice solo album himself.

Lucinda was also sporting a Tele that nite:

and also had a cool as **** hat!

John Jackson (Strat) and Kenny Vaughan (Ernie Ball Albert Lee model/Jerry Jones 12-string) were with her on the "Car Wheels"-era gig I caught. Doug Petibone was with her on the "World Without Tears" tour (her most recent), playing a Trussart, I believe.
She's always got great guitarist players in her band.

Man! I dig Lucinda William's, she always has killer players w/ her. All the guys listed above are supremely tasteful. Current guitarist Doug Pettibone plays beautifully to every song of hers... Great, great player!

Lucinda's drummer, Jim Christie just played on my entire solo CD last week. I have some Demo Mp3's below... He's my favorite drummer. I waited for him to come off the road to do the sessions, Artful player and extremely greasy! Really funny as well...
I also had Kevin McCormick play bass, he produces Jackson Browne. We cut 12 basic tracks in 3 days, fantastic players.

Lucinda, Buddy Miller and Emmylou are my fav. musicians...

Cool,
Greg V.

He was the other guitarist that nite, John, played a Strat all nite if I recall. Both played really well. It was quite a show.

It was Pettibone when I saw her at ACL Fest last year.

Lucinda musta signed a deal with the Devil to look as good as she does at 50.

Hey Greg V

You here in LA too? How's Kevin McCormick doing? I've known him since were kids. Only seen him once in a great while now.

Someone once mentioned you using Line 6 stuff. You ought to come check out my site for Line 6 gear (POD) and visit one of our Line 6 User groups. http://www.instituteofnoise.com

The next meeting we have should feature their new Acoustic Variax modeling guitar, which for country fans will appeciate the Mandocello. Now if I can only get them to add a Tipple that might be the deal.

Drop a line, eh?

Hi InstituteOfNoise,
First I dig your name... :)
Kevin is doing really well I'd say, nice studio and beautiful hill-side home overlooking the Channel Islands. I didn't want to leave. Kinda reminds me of Hawaii when I lived there a few years back...

Yes, I've been using the PODXT for a few months now and like it a lot! Very effective tool in my home studio. The demos on my website below are all PODXT except for the acoustic instruments and the B3/Leslie sound on "Indian Sunset" Some friends thought I used one of my vintage tube amps.

I'll head over and check out your site!

I heard one of the Proto-Variaxs over at Lyle Workmans when he first got it, pretty cool but sadly didn't play it too much. I love the ideas you Line6 folks come up with and the Acoustic-Variax sounds like another winner, as we all know getting acoustics to sound "right" is tuff, esp. in a live setting. Plus acoustics are hard to travel with...

Cool,Greg V.

I saw Taras briefly today but didn't get to ask him about the Lucinda tour. I'll follow up with him next week.

Yeah Greg, the Variax is a cool tool. It does take a bit of getting used to. Especially when you say dial up the Tele, but nothing about it feels like a Tele. Does Kevin still do that Love Nuggets project? I'll have to call him sometime. I also sent you an email about a gig. Did ya get it?

Hi InstituteOfNoise,

Wow! I went to your site, really classy design. Man your a great player on those clips as well, Others lurking should check 'em out... Very good tones...

I've never met Taras but really dig his playing as well. I caught one of the Lucinda W. shows at the El Rey last year and it was truly inspiring. One of the Top 3 concerts ever for me. Jim Christie and Taras pull the groove waaayyyyyy back on some tunes and the pocket is as deep as the Grand Canyon! Man, it doesn't matter how many Pringles and Mayonnaise-Sandwiches you've eaten or how many Pat Boone records you've heard, you can never fall outta their groove! :)

I don't think Love Nuggets does too much anymore, BTW that's how I got to know Kevin and Jim. I'm good friends w/ Mark Goldenberg and loved to see his trio "ViVa Goldenberg" play. Kevin and Jim were his "Band of Gypsys" :) and I knew I wanted them to play on my tracks.

BTW, Kevin and I did some recording on the "first version" debute Melissa Etheridge record back in '88. Although Kevin and I never met since I was brought in to replace guitar tracks. These tracks were produced by Jim Gaines and all his production was canned 'cause they were too aggressive and not acoustic enough for the label... Eventually they recorded all new tracks with Kevin producing for the final release. Oh well, "another" almost story... :)

Never got the email re: gig? Please try me again at jejajinx@yahoo.com

Cool,
Greg V.

Thanks Greg! I'm the king of those "another stories"... Small world sometimes... Some of those tracks on my site showing the Line 6 gear has Mike Baird and Mark Browne (from Melissa Etheridges's band of the last 6-7 years). We tracked 5 tunes live in one afternoon and there they be. Mark is another fave bass player to work with. And Mike, what can you say about him. He's one of the best here in LA!

I saw Kevin at a mutual friend's birthday gig a couple of years ago at The Little Rock in Tarzana. Lukather and Landau played 4 sets of covers with him as a present. Nice gift, eh?

If they clear it, you ought to come by the studio when I track the guitar overdubs the following week.

Thanks David! Taras and his wife own one of the best vintage clothing stores here in LA. Next week when I'm down by it, I'm gonna stop in and chat with him.
