Diverse musical tastes...what are yours..?

Sure we all love Teles but what types of music do you like? Here goes:

Classical: I grew up with classical in our home 4 hours a day or so with my sister and mother playing violin and piano. Not that I can play much of it at all but I do love it and love to attend her concerts.

Bluegrass: Another thing we had in the home growing up (at the time) in Northern Virginia. One of my Dad's students at the Univ. had a cool bluegrass band that came over and played on occasion. My sister and I always requested "that song on the Beverly Hillbillies"...hee hee (Flatt and Scruggs).

Newgrass: NGR, also Sam Bush Band now!

Classic Rock: Ah teenage years...I'll let one this speak for itself.

Old Timey stuff: Traditional folk music, anything that taps your foot. John Hartford, my buddy Tom's band the Reeltime Travelers, things with clawhammer banjo on it.

Old Jazz: Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderly, Coltrane

Blues: Muddy, the 3 Kings, Roy B.

Alt. Country stuff: Lucinda Williams, G. Parsons,

Twang and bender stuff!: Byrds, Danny G., Bill Kirchen

Punk: Clash!

Modern Stuff and etc:Weezer, Phish, Widespread Panic, Bela Fleck,

Bakersfield Swing: Buck and Don

What sort of diverse and/or odd musical stuff do you all like?

I love a good marching band especially if it's all bagpipes. My father used to take me to the old armouries in Toronto back in the late 50s where the 48th Highlanders practised. BTW: he wasn't punishing me , I looked forward to those visits.

Yeah the pipes man!!!!!

I remember when I first got my FXWG in '82 and I rode
up to the Kangamangus Highway waaaay up in The
White Mountains (between Lincoln and North Conway)
and The Highland Games were at Loon Mountain...at
various strategic points on The Kangamangus they'd
be a Piper....it was really neat because it was misty in the mountains and even with The Hog idling low (some
of you know the cadence eh) you could hear the music
totally surreal, like being in another world. I really miss
those days...

Dig your list...

except classic rock has worn out it's welcome.

I listen to everything on there, but would add
Stax/Motown/Philly soul.

Tex/Mex

Webb Pierce era Honky Tonk

& how do you classify They Might Be Giants?

I listen to virtually anything that has tones/and or rhythms

I can only say, in my opinion, there are two types of music: Good music and not-so-good music.

Joel :)

I like a lot of the stuff that those non-commercial radio stations play and very rarely listen to commercial radio anymore except for "talk radio".
I spent the last 2 years in a "classic rock" band and it ended up making me ill. Jazz, roots, old country/bluegrass, Texas swing for me thank you

Lately I've been branching out

and listening to rap & hiphop as well as older country. I think much of rap gets unfairly dissed. Like any other genre there is good and bad stuff among it. Seems like country is the same way. Some of it is vilified for its slickness and overproduction, while other areas are quite inventive and maintian an historical root. Some of the hiphop using R&B is actually very, very good, great singing, wonderful writing, and skillful musicianship. If anyone told me two years ago I'd be listening to this stuff I would have thought they were crazy, but I've always bragged I had an open mind about music so I was called on it, and I found it's not a bad thing. You might discover something new.

I like a lot of different things...

I've really been into newer rock the last few years like Widespread Panic, North Mississippi Allstarts and The Big Wu. My roots are in rock, i.e., Dylan, The Stones, Neil Young ect...Lately I've been listening to a lot of newer Hip-Hop, you know, sort of like rap but much more intelligent boty lyrically and musically.

I listen to pretty much everything. I don't choose a genre, if I like it, I like it. I used to stand out among everyone because of my broad musical tastes and collection, but I believe it is a LOT more common these days. Seems to be anyway.

I like some of almost everything. I don't care for much of the Nu-Metal, though. Or Rap. Just my personal taste. I listen mostly to Classic Rock and Country, but every once in a while I can go for some Jazz or Blues.

I really like Scott Joplin's music and would like to find some tab for some of his songs. I doubt that any are available, though so I'll just have to figure it out by ear.

I do choose a genre! I often search for new music (online, at libraries, in stores) by the genre. This week I've been looking for current non-Django gypsy jazz stuff, among others.

Nowadays I listen to swing, old jazz, blues, rock, rockabilly, old-style or guitar driven country, some "world music", old RnB, soul, funk. Used to listen to Weezer, 60s pop, "synthesizer music", old style heavy and hard rock (ac/dc DP Black Sabbath Iron Maiden Aerosmith through to Metallica, some Sepultura as well, Rage against the machine Soundgarden etc). Very little classical nowadays, I'd prefer to see it live, but the wifey doesn't like it, so we don't go. I don't find rap obnoxious at all, though finding a gem can be really difficult, I agree.

I'm pretty picky about what I listen to for personal enjoyment, but it's still pretty varied so it would take alot of typing. Live I can say I like pretty much anything as long as it's performed well, unless of course I'm playing it.

All kinds of stuff works for me, if I'm playing I can dig on just about anything, same as if I'm watching. However, if I'm going to listen to music, the lyrics are key. I like the songwriter types when it's time tojust listen and relax.

Townes Van Zandt
Tom Russell
Lucinda Williams
Nanci Griffith
Robert Earl Keen
Charlie Robison
Neal Young
Bob Dylan
Shake Russell
John Prine
Steve Goodman
Michael Hearn
Don Conoscenti

You get the idea.

Ok....i've been on this forum for a while now...and i have always been scared to post some of my music.

But all this talk of open minds, and appriciation of different types of music has encouraged me. Here are 3 MP3s from my band, Someday. (www.somedayrock.com)

http://www.somedayrock.com/music/dem...New%20Road.mp3

http://www.somedayrock.com/music/dem...%20Goodbye.mp3

http://www.somedayrock.com/music/dem...ne%20Today.mp3

(be warned it isn't country, and i only sneak a tele in (72 thinline RI at that) on the rhythm track....the lead is a strat, and it is all pretty distorted....comments are welcome.)

Enjoy....

Used to be eclectic...

...but all the classical, metal, blues, rock, bluegrass, country, electronica, pop, punk, and folk in the house have meant nothing for the last couple of months as I've become totally obsessed with Lucinda Williams.

And I mean obsessed. Thank god my wife believes I'm singing "I Envy The Wind" to her! Well, I am, but my heart is riven, if you know what I mean...

I've been amazed by a lot of singer/songwriters in my time, but she makes me feel like we've guiltily held hands while sipping coffee after hours, talking about important stuff but afraid to let our eyes meet. Damn, I'm stung!

Frankly, these are exciting feelings for a man my age, but I do sorta miss the other music...

Lots of 60s and 70s rock. There were so many different styles of music that were popular then but still considered popular music, folk-rock, country-rock, jazz-rock, etc. I think it was a very creative time. I'm sitting here with some Beatles on right now comparing the original Let it Be with the Naked reissue. Other than classic rock, I like some non-commercial country and bluegrass, and straight up blues.

To quote the great Bill Hullett

"Most decent musicians I've met have two things in common. They enjoy virtually every form of popular music and they've all played a Telecaster at one time or another". I'll bet you have to go back a good 3 years for that one...do you remember that Bill?

With the exception of hardcore techno, hip-hop, viloent rap, and REALLY avant-garde jazz, I don't think there's anything I won't at least give a listen to. In the past year I've seen everyone from Phish to Bromberg to Hotclub of Cowtown to Derek Trucks to Del McCoury and lots of stuff somewhere in between. I don't know what art is, but I know what I like!

My tastes are all over the map....though what I tend to do is get REALLY into a particular artist and seek out everything I can find by them...until I find someone else who strikes my fancy..two years ago I listened to almost nothing except Miles Davis and Bill Evans...the last several months it's been Buddy & Julie Miller, and is now moving into Paul Westerberg...for now....

Ahhhh...Bill Evans--great choice, sound dog!

Yes, I know this is a Tele forum and that Bill Evans was a pianist, but he was a great musician, period.

And that Miles Davis fellow...I understand he was a pretty decent horn player. :P

Pre-rock and roll country boogie (Delmore Brothers, Lonnie Glosson, etc)

50s rockabilly, honky tonk and hillbilly stuff

60s and 70s country (Johnny Paycheck, Tammy, Buck, Waylon, George)

60s punk (Seeds, 13th Floor Elevators, etc)

70s punk

A little Electronica (Verve Remixes)

60s and 70s soul and funk (James Brown, the Meters, Lee Dorsey, Bettie Davis)]

Western swing

Guitar jazz (Wes Montgomery, Herb Ellis, Joe Pass...NOT AlDiMeola, Pat Metheny, Larry Carlton)

And usually the more obscure, raw and weird it is the more I'm gonna like it.

stuff I don't care for: Robotic dance music, gloomy nu metal and alt-rock, most rap, stale classic rock radio fare.

Hank to Hendrix

to borrow a line from one of Neil Young's songs.
I like a LOT of different types and styles of music, county ( most of what passes for country these days doesn't qualify though!) blues, R&B, Stax, Motown, R&R all kinds of stuff really.
I don't like the detuned heavy chunka chunka stuff with hollering from the back of you throat vocals that seems to be popular with the kids these days. Don't like most rap, or techno.
But if it's musical I'll probably listen to it.

I only like rock music made by white men, with about 5 exceptions. (bjork, sandra covin, jimi, bob marley, cornelius). I do like a broad range of rock, however...although some people might call it "nerd rock" or "art fag music" ::shudder::

actually in my music history class I just heard a ROCKING harpsichord jam...and beethoven is pretty sweet.

here's the list:

OLD

obvious: Beatles, Zep, Dylan
less obvious: Syd Barrett, T-Rex, Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits

CURRENT

obvious: radiohead, "new garage" (Strokes, Stripes, Hives), beck
less obvious: Fugazi, Trail of Dead, (Dylan, Waits)

also like some things by: bjork, Interpol, Meat Puppets, the WHO, Low (words),
Godspeed You! Black Emperor (maida, storm, etc), The Doors, Nirvana,
Clinic, Queen, Metallica, Hendrix, Cake (Fashion Nugget), Basement Jaxx,
Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, Bowie, Daft Punk (Discovery tracks 1-4),
Cream, Tom Petty, Boston, Cornelius, Zappa, Gang of Four (damaged goods),
Kevin Shields (city girl), Wilco (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, California Stars),
Iggy Pop & the Stooges (search and destroy), Zwan (come with me, broken heart),
yeah yeah yeahs (bang), Bob Marley (and other reggae), Guided By Voices,
Flaming Lips, Aphex Twin, Modest Mouse, The Shins, The Rosebuds, Pixies
Stephen Malkmus (Oyster), Sonic Youth, The Sames (download their mp3s),
Broken Social Scene,
selected hip hop, country, folk, classical, blues, jazz & OTHER music
(can you tell I love rock?)
+ more to come as I find them (I always do)

teenage favorites: Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains, Pink Floyd (post-Syd)

childhood favorites: James Taylor, Raffi, Nancy Griffith (MCHammer, newkidsontheblock)

ya got a good list

but my alltime favorite to listen to for easing the soul is
Native American Flute....I also play one and it's totally relaxing....cool thing is, it's tuned to pentatonic mode 1 & 4...so it's not a far stretch from the bluez.....

then of course...the obvious for a true bluez kat.....

Classical...I listen to it all the time.......

then Chant...maybe Gregorian or Native American.....depends on the mood.....

There's something to learn from every kind of music. Sometimes I learn that I don't like that kind of music.
But if someone makes music with an honest intent, then I'll probably give it a listen. Music that seems manufactured to me, usually leaves me cold.
Lately I've been listening to a lot of '60's jazz, Cajun music, Blues guitar, Irish fiddle tunes, '60's San Francisco rock and meditation music.

I listen mostly to Phish, the Grateful Dead, and String Cheese Incident (in that order). I also try to listen to a decent amount of Praise & Worship music (in order to get new songs for Church) but am musically turned WAY off by a lot of it.

among many many others, from jazz to rock to country to blues how's this one..
Motorhead- rock on lemmy! he is a guy livin what he sings and singin what he lives. i used to work at a club here in new haven, and before the show, he was walkin around with a pint cup filled with ice and jim beam (my pal poured it it wasnt fake lol), then mid show, he asks some girl to show her boobs.. well one of the road crew was hangin around and at this point, he start laughin. i ask him whats so funny , and he says that is lemmy's sign to his pals and the road crew that he got (hmm someone is gonna get pissed sorry) a hummer on the bus before the show. ROCK AND ROOOOOOOLLL GO LEMMY! not really sure why, but i love them.
and how about this one.
Gwar- if you ever have a chance to see them i am begging you. go. dont wear new clothes tho! their show is one of the most inventive, original and great shows i have ever seen.
disclaimer: it's a spoof on sex and violence, and the show takes sex and violence and just goes way over the top with it. don't bring your kids, and if you dont want your clothes stained with fake blood and other bodily fluids stay away from the stage, and be prepared to be shocked.
i like wes montgomery a lot too
:P

I listen to EVERYTHING.
From Greek, Turkish and Balkan Music to country, funk indie, rock, classical and jazz music.

My only requirement is that it is HONEST and TRUE.

The only music I can't stand is Hip Hop just because it is impossible for me to undestand the lyrics (is this English?) and I prefer to listen to the original tunes from were the "music" is stolen (ok "sampled" from).I also find the way most Hip Hop artists present women in their videos to be totally VULGAR...
Modern "R & B" is pretty boring too but some tunes are nice...[/b]
