bigsby for a tele question..to bridge or not to bridge

It seems I remeber somone here did a bigsby without using the mustang styled "tone suckling" bridge. I'm looking at a Bigsby trem on ebay and wondering what I'd have to do to use my exisitng bridge..http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=41407

what about using a tunomatic? Could that work? I have been wondering about trying that on my bigsby equiped tele.

I did it with my Buck Owens tele. Basically, all you have to do is cut slots in the rear wall of the bridge. Note, this only works for 3 saddle vintage ones. You cannot do it with modern saddles, for obvious reasons, and on vintage 6 saddle ones the screws get in the way of the slots. It would possibly work with a modern bridge if you put Larry Fontana's saddles on them, but you may find that the screws get in the way even then.

I seem to have a plethora of intonated saddles

do you see where it would be a problem with that?

black tele he got from me? I was trying to get away from drilling the keepers in a vintage body..I would have no problem in a repro or an import. That black tele had more holes in it than...scrapes. I ended up buying that back and selling it on ebay

Not really, but I haven't tried compensated ones. The main issue with this approach is the strings pass the saddles at a very wide angle, leaving little downward pressure and a smaller area of contact between the saddle and the string. You may find the strings sliding on the saddles in the beginning, until they settle. I guess you could cut grooves in them.

It has happened once or twice to me, when bending heavily, even though mine have grooves.

bigsby

i have a bigsby tele. i had the vintage bridge and filed down notches for the stings. the drawback is that its hard to intonate the bridge after the bigsby unit is installed. i couldn fit a screwdriver in the right angle.
it switshed to the mustang style setup and it now works great.

I've got a vintage style bridge with 3 compensated saddles. Plenty of pictures of my guitar (sunburst Thinline with Bardens) are floating around here. I did cut grooves for the two E strings, as it's narrow coming out of the Bigsby. Keep the bridge pieces and nut lubricated. I intonated without the Bigsby bridge on. It would be a little difficult to adjust, but I guess it was set up to begin with, and I have not needed to make any adustments.

I don't find the difference in downward pressure to affect it that much.

Everything goes through the Bisgby, although it was a string-through body for the first few years I had it. Added the Bigsby in 1997, compensated saddles in 2002.

I built a Tele w/ a Bigsby recently.....

and I used a roller TOM. I like rollers when I have a Bigsby, less string breakage Smoother action.
