Hey, any good venues for live music in Dundee ? I'll be there next weekend. I remember a few years ago going someplace (upstairs) and seeing a four piece (40 something) band, all with Laney gear who were brilliant. Anything like that in or around Dundee nowadays?

erm...
hey scotland...
im afraid the only real venues ive been to have been specifically to see bands on tour, so The Reading Rooms and the Westport Bar (the westie to everyone else) really - but i dont think they have band nites normally as such. The place you described sounds like the Westie - it looks like an old ballroom inside - and you go up a spiral staircase to get to it. Theres an Aberdonian band playin there on the 27th (The Cellers), u mite want to check out. -I also like going to 'The Art Bar' its on Perth road opposite the art college. Theyve got acoustic open mike nights on wed or tues every week (usually pretty good, and not just drunken students who think they can play oasis on an acoustic!) and they have jazz nites every thurs (if thats your thing - its not really mine) The only place i know of that has 'Band Nights' is the Doghouse - and even then thats really just metal/punk. Im really not aware of any other 'scenes' so to speak in Dundee, mainly cos im a student and rarely venture away from the union (well if you had a bar/club right beside your flat that served pints for £1.50 you wouldnt go anywhere else!!) Having said that, ive heard good things about 'The Beat Bar' and 'Chambers' - having mixes of jazz/folk/rock 'n' roll bands playing most weekends...but ive never been myself cos theyre too far away for me to be bothered to walk! Anyway, hope that helps you some... Stu |

oh, did you hear Mr Doherty and Mr Barat were talking in a pub last week??!!!!! Theyve made up finally...heres hoping that there may be a reunion! I saw the libs play in King Tuts in Glasgow (the legondary tiny venue where everyone plays!!! its only like 200 capacity or something) in 2001 or 2002 (i cant remember) but it was the best gig of my life - something special goes on between them two. Ive seen Babyshambles and Pete-less Libs a few times too aswell, but they dont compare. Having said that, Peter is doing a poetry reading at our Burns and aw That festival in Ayr in a week or two, and i cant wait!! ...honestly, im not an obsessed fan... Stu - waiting patiently for the good ship albion to arrive (btw if anyone doesnt know anything about the Libs, im sorry, this post will have made absolutely no sense at all) |

hes in a hell of a lot better state at the min than he was 9months ago.
I saw him play this small place in dundee (my band were supposed to be supporting too, but he ended up bringin bout 4 supports with him, but anyway...). That was the night after he didnt appear on stage in Aberdeen because he had 'fallen down stairs' on the tourbus... It was awful - he cam out and looked like a rabbit in the headlights, everyone was trying to grab him. After mumbling through a few songs incoherently, he stopped singing IN THE MIDDLE of 'What Katie Did', and ran off in tears...the rest of the band had no idea what was happeneing, so they just finished the song and walked off...that was him at his lowest i think - that was before the tabloids started to pick up on his state... as for Miss Moss, she used to date Bobby Gilespie when Primal Scream were 'cool', so theres obviously no real feelings there - i think its over now anyway, heres hoping!! I cant wait to see what hes gona be like in Ayr, because its a pretty intamite venue, and its supposed to be poetry and an acoustic guitar - may even be quite civilised?...nah, i doubt it Stu |
