Double Cutaway Concepts
Hi Guys (and Girls!)
Being a newbie to this forum, and having gotten here after buying a reasonable Squier Affinity Tele for $50.00 (on which I have replaced the bridge with a 3 saddle ashtray version, replaced the plastic 3 way switch with a Fender item......and on which I am aging the paintwork and acid fuming the chrome at the moment....pics later) The relative affordability and bolt-ability of these guitars (I own a '63 Hofner which is a mellow guitar but a bugger to work on) has me thinking of getting or building another (who said "thats how I started.....now I've got twelve!"?) . I like the double cutaway of the Hofner (and Strat) but love the variety of sounds the Tele can muster. This got me thinking about a doulble cutaway Tele. The conventional D/C Tele with the equal sized horns looks a little tame for my liking. But retaining the Tele slab-like body would be important. To this end I've been playing in M/S Paint and have come up with a concept that is a compromise. Modelled on a cross between a Tele, Strat and P-bass, the body would be left with straight edges (no Strat like contouring) ![]() [url=http://g.imageshack.us/img211/doublecutawayconcepttj0.jpg/1/][IMG]http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/doublecutawayconcepttj0.jpg/1/w410.png Who knows I might get this built someday, but while I was playing I thought does anybody else on the Forum have some avante-garde concepts for a Tele D/C? Cheers Jason |

I have an old
Chandler Metro that is almost the exact shape. Same Tele layout, same stratty outline. Mine does however emply a strat trem much to my objections. I'll find a photo and post it later.

I like it, I've been kicking around the same idea for a while now.
Just have to finish some other restoration projects before I can get started...

That's close to the squier 51. I was thinking of modding mine and replacing the stock bridge with a tele 3 saddle (humbucker version) and replacing the the neck pick up with some version of a tele chrome cover!
The squier 51 is a great guitar and there's a whole forum dedicated to squier 51 modders. kc |

Nice work on the picture there. My only critique would be to modify the pickguard just a little so it didn't go so close to the edge on the bass side of the neck.

DC concept seems to me to be something about a guitar that is not a Tele. I always wonder why everyone wants to always change up the Telecaster. Seems foolish to me since there are so many other guitars out there with what you want to keep screwing up Teles!
Go ahead and get you another guitar, then come back here and talk Telecaster when your in the mood. So frustrated!

But if nobody ever altered the equipment they came with ("change up the Telecaster") then this would be a much smaller (and lonelier) forum. If we took the objection to its ludicrous extreme then anything Non Fender, non standard wouldn't belong in these discussion groups (No Partscasters, no replaced bridges, no after market parts; no replacement bodies, no replacement necks: nothing) I've heard the same "tastefully altered versus 100% original" stance banded around in classic car circles too, but there are some lovely Mustangs, Jaguars and even Beetles out there aren't there? Although some of them are decidely different to how they rolled off the production line The idea I put forward is not a Tele, but rather a Tele inspired idea. Maybe I would use a genuine Tele neck, and all Tele hardware but would this make it a Tele.....strictly no, but it would be a cool conversation starter at jams, and who knows may play like an absolute dream. In short it sounds like it could be fun to build, may even be fun to play And isn't that the real reason we're here? |

Like Jack W. and bunches of others I like to do "something a little different." Tele inspired for sure, but I don't call 'em Teles. I like the basic Tele shape, but am not afraid to modify it to suit my eye. You go Jason! Here's one of mine-

I've but one love in that department, and some may agree: Mustangesque double-cut guitars by Mr. Scott Lentz just might be the sweetest of them all...Add the CARR and it just might be invincible.
