Tascam US-428 DAW Controller Opinion?

I have been offered a new Tascam US-428 USB Digital Recording Control Surface for the equivalent of $300 worth of gear I no longer use.

As I am setting up my home studio, I am intrigued by the offer. I have been using CoolEdit and Band in a Box, and have been considering moving to ProTools with either a Digi001 or Mbox.

I see the Tascams go for nearly $500 new, and around $300 used. Opinions yea or nay if this is a good unit and/or a good deal.

Thanks as always.

MF info on the unit here:

I've got one

I've got one and I really like it. It comes with Cubasis SVT software (an OEM version of Steinberg's older SVT software), and I upgraded to Cubase SL, but the 428 works very well on my computer.

I'm using an older cast off computer with a 400 MH Pent II so I bought a new PCI USB card (for $20) just to be sure that my USB was compliant with the Tascam. (Computers this old are notorious for old 1.0 versions of USB that don't work well.)

I'm sure if I used it with my 2 gig lap top it would be even better. But I'm not having a bunch of trouble recording even with the bog slow old computer.

The controls work the software great and the inputs are clean and convenient. I'm a happy camper.

I bought mine on Ebay for $350... so don't give away too much stuff to get yours.

Good Luck

PS. You can download a FREE version of ProTools that will work with the 428, however you have to be running Windows 98 SE. ProTools only has a free version for that OS, it won't work on anything newer.
