Danny Use a Bbender on 'Glass'?

With all due respect to Clarence whose music I love, my favorite tune using a Tele for steel effects has to be 'There Stands the Glass' from the Humbler CD.

Did Danny use a bbender on this tune or was it all with his hands?

I'm pretty sure that was done with hands and fingers. No B-bender. :D

Nope, hands only.

It's a shame Danny never recorded more country music, because he knew a ton of it, and he played it better than anyone I've ever seen. And it was way beyond just hot licks, too (although he certainy had plenty of those!) – his country soloing always had that elusive melancholy quality to it that distinguishes the truly great from the imitators. Even the happy songs have a twinge of sadness to them. Think of "Buckaroo" as an example.

I was lucky enough to work with Jimmy Day, "Mr. Country Soul" for a couple of years in Austin in the early '80s, and his playing had that same quality to it. In fact, Jimmy was one of Danny's heros. Danny came out to see the Western Swing band we were playing with one time when he was in town, and I kept trying to get him up on stage to play with Jimmy, but he wouldn't do it. Said he just wanted to sit and listen and soak it all in. Quite a guy. :-) CS

roy b.

i too like danny on that song... his playing on that cut seems to have an emotional quality and depth that i don't hear in a lot in his other playing... the best telecaster style pedal steel playing i've ever heard still remains roy buchanan on the early 70s live recordings of together again and other stuff from the same time... track it down, it's out there... absolutely untouchable... tj

Showing my ignorance of country music

Can someone give me example's of Danny's music which you would consider straight country? I've listened to: Redneck Jazz, Unfinished Business, Portraits, Untouchable, The Humbler, Relentless, 88 Elmira St, and Cruisin Deuces... I am listening to country and don't even know it?

I remember seeing a review for the first Hellecasters album and having the review say something about country. I didn't hear any country there either...

If you ask me about the blues, I can give a definition and examples. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

That's not only one of my favorite songs but one of my favorite versions of it...GREAT pickin' on there. Whenever someone says Gatton was nothing but flash, that's one of the songs I always make 'em listen too. I wish Danny would have recorded a straight country album as well - I bet it would of had a permanent home in my CD player!

I listened to "Glass" today

in the car. It's one of my all-time favorites. Just so tasteful, incredible.
I got (what I think is a bootleg) Danny Gatton Live in Philadelphia a few months ago off eBay. Ironically, the stuff from the Philly show doesn't sound as good (to me) as the included "bonus tracks" which were taken off a Gatton band performance on the radio program "Mountain Stage". Following the warm-up on Bill Doggett's "Rainbow Riot" (another style Gatton mastered see "Sky King"; Gatton LOVED to quote Doggett guitarist Billy Butler), the band launch into "Today I Started Loving You Again" and kick major a s with 2 feet. Holloman or Windsor on vocals? The band change key 3 times (playing in 4 different keys), every verse featuring Danny playing INCREDIBLE country Tele, whether complimenting the vocalist, or soloing.
I think I paid around 20 bucks for the double cd, and this tune alone was worth it.
Hey Chris, always enjoy your D.C. anecdotes.
Now, can anyone tell me where to find Roy B. doing "Together Again" and "other stuff from the same time", please.
Regards,
Bill

Bill, if I can still locate my tape I'll give you a call. Might take a while...

Thanks, Walt

I'll never forget the guy who turned me on to "Cajun" a few years back.

Danny Gatton on ...The Glass

Anyone have the 3 CD boot that Todd Lecuyer sells on ebay? It is with Danny and Buddy Emmons and a horn section playing at the Birchmere, in VA. It is a GREAT performance, and There Stands The Glass is particularly good. The sound quality on the CD is excellent. Check out the seller "tlecuyerx" on ebay, he has CD's and videos posted quite often. I guess the downside is that it doesn't benefit Danny's family, so you have to weigh that with the ability to listen to the limited amount of stellar live performances he did that stuck to tape. I suppose one can be forgiven if you have all the CD's that his mother has released. Buy them first.
