So are you drilling/routing the ferrules after the body is finished, doesn't it chip the lacquer?

Looking great Ron.

Why do you do them after? Or should I say why does every other build I've seen here do them first? I had a problem with my first build because too much lacquer had built up in the holes and I couldn't get the ferrules in, i tried to drill them but they chipped slightly.

I can certainly seeing the advantage as I would imagine that the ferrule just pops in.

Once again, I'm very impressed.

Moving right along..... today was to be the finale... but when I opened the box "o parts, I see the wrong pots.... but I did get close....

installing the Fralin P 90's couldn't be easier.... a bit of firm foam beneath, and run in the two mounting screws..

Once that’s done.. I address the neck pocket…. I always make ‘em tight, so each has to be hand fit at this stage. I begin by removing the lacquer buildup along the edges with a small sanding block.

once that’s done… I shape the corners for a tight fit…. This is before…

I Dremel it into submission..

This is the fit after a bit of work..

Now on to the bridge…. I use a 48” rule to indicate the path of the strings, this way there are no surprises when I string ‘er up.. It lines up perfectly with the neck and the string-through holes..

run the mounting screws in and here it is at this stage..

Now… I do this…..

and check these. . .

then place the Pickguard in position.

Pant. . . pant…. This thing’s lookin’ good…..

I mount the hardware and run in the pickguard screws…Tuesday the correct pots will be here and I’ll be finishing ‘er up.. in the mean time….

Hubba hubba!

I am disappointed though that you are not installing the wiring through the f-holes.

Don't joke, I've got to do that on my thinline build

It's looking gorgeous Ron.

I never realised that was how P90's were mounted.

If ya think wiring it without a rear access is hard, wait till ya try to get those Pots in there...

You will have to have a rear access, no getting around it.

That sounds like a challenge

Nope, I refuse to give in. I've tested with some Alpha mini pots using a wire cradle/holder and I can get them in and up through the holes. I also can get a horizontal 3-way switch in. Wether or not I can do it when everything is connected is another matter but I'm gonna give it a bloody good go. Stubborn Brit that I am.

If I have to give in, which i won't how do you make the template for the access plate a perfect fit for the access hole template? Is it just a case of sand it, test it, sand some more? Or is there a clever trick to get a kind of negative template?

Cheers
dave

by the way Ron, I love the way that the pen line on the binding came out!

Scubs, good luck with stuffing those controls through the f-holes - with mini pots it might be easier like you said. If I recall correctly, part of the solution used by Gibson on their Supreme, which has no rear access plate, was to use an over-sized rectangular jack plate so they could fish the pots in from there (the other part of the equation was that the pickup routs opened up into the body chambers). I noticed on my ES-339 that they used the exposed-braid coax wire tacked to the backs of the pots with one wire running in a circle connecting all the pots. This tied them together and holds them roughly in position so they'd want to go back where they should be after you stuff them in the f-hole. When fishing controls into a hollowbody Gretsch, I used mini pots and a small strip of brass connecting the two pots (like a mini control plate only on the inside) to hold them together at the right spacing as I fished them inside. Oh, and lots of dental floss or fishing line and a pair of slender Kelly clamps.

Ron, anything unusual about the pots you're waiting for? full-pass? blender? dual ganged? unobtanium alloy?

As I creep forward at light speed, (it's a black light),, the pots came in so now I'm trying a few different wiring schematics looking for a specific sound.

I thought I'd be able to do it but not I'm thinking that the capacitor between the two pots may stop me getting them in. Are there any wiring schematics where the cap doesn't go from pot to pot?

There is no pickup selector... the electronics are from the original 1949 Gibson ES-5.

The three by the F hole are separate volume controls, one for each pup. The forward knob is a tone control, but I added a push pull to reverse phase, to give a nasal tone when engaged.

Ah, I see, I'd wondered if the forward knob was a rotary selector.

Sounds similar to the controls of a Bass guitar.
