New finish for an old Tele

Hi ya'll. I picked up a MIJ 84-87 Tele awhile back in a trade. It's stipped to the bare wood and I'm trying to decide on how to have it finished. My thoughts are as follows:

Red, White, and Blue (like Buck and Don)

Silver Flake (again like Buck and Don)

or even just going clear coat with a Black or Tortoise guard

Let me know your thoughts.
Let the voting begin. *L*

I should mention that it's a maple board and I believe that Buck and Don's sparkle's were Rosewood board.

Ok, here's where my ignorance starts to show. I don't know what kind of wood it is and I don't know how to find out. The wood has some knicks and 2, or 3, small gouges in it. I thought about some kind of a relic finish also. My cousin will be doing the work. He used to finish guitars for a custom builder that he was friends with. The only cost I'll have in the re-finish is whatever the materials cost.

Unless you already have one, you just can't go wrong with Butterscotch.

It will always look classic.

Joel if it has nicks probably needs to be a solid finish, to patch up the nicks and holes, unless you want that relic finish... the off white relic finish (blonde) could look good..
If you want a like new finish ... solid color...
check reranch.com their gallery, warmoth.com gallery and usacustomguitars.com gallery..
Also Fender site has some new colors..
The Sparkle finish looks real good, but your cousin has his/her work cut out...

check out the tele in the usacustomguitars gallery... type of white ,,, butterscotch... and you can leave the nicks in... for that relic look.. suggest use nictrocellouse paint and topcoat.

Thank ya'll for your input. I still haven't decided how to have it finished. I'm still leaning toward the red, white, and blue but I must admit I love the look of a butterscotch Tele. That has a strong possibility.
