40 Greatest Men of Country Music...
...or something like that, anyway, tonight on CMT.
When they came to Buck Owens there was some great footage of the Buckaroos live on the Ranch Party show in the 60s, but then there was later (I presume) stuff that showed Don Rich playing a Les Paul Recording model! The one with the weird low-impedance slanted pickups? Ever see Don play one of those?

Yep - It's true!
I believe (and I may be wrong on this) but Buck lost his deal with Fender in the early 70's. Gibson gave Buck a pile of stuff and Buck himself started playing an SG! Anyway Don Rich was using a Gibson Les Paul Recording with the low-imped pickups.
The LP, "Live in Las Vegas" show's Buck on the cover with his SG and inside the gatefold cover is several pics of Don with his Les Paul. Crazy huh?! Johnny Isaacs

In 1971 CBS dropped just about everything "Country". They got rid of country artist on their record labels, they got rid of country shows on TV, and started getting rid of country endorses for Fender, and started discontinuing Fender's steel guitar line.
That year they canceled "The Beverly Hillbillies", Petticoat Junction", "Mayberry RFD", and even "Hee Haw"(Buck's show). At the time Buck had a deal with Chicago Musical Instruments (Owned by the same company that had Gibson at the time) to make and sell his red, white, and blue acoustic guitars at Sears for $99. For each $99 guitar sold Buck got $2.50. I'm guessing that there wasn't to much arm twisting to get an endorsement deal with Gibson, since they were already paying Buck for marketing the red, white, and blue guitars. |

Those Les Paul Recordings are odd guitars. Didn't Les design them with the low-impedance pickups so he could plug straight into the board?
