Mighty Fine Looking Group Of 3 CIJ Jerry Donahue Teles
Nice to see someone with similar issues as me!!!
I always wanted to take a crack at obtaining these 3, but alas my GAS has dissipated. How has this person been hiding his collection from us? (not affiliated with the seller)

Those are mighty fine looking. Well ...... what do you know? The serial number on the bridge plate begins with an "A" on each of them.
He's saying they're 1998 based on this number. Says he's had the necks off two of them and has seen 1998 on the necks. I see they don't have a serial number below the "Crafted In Japan" on the necks. Perhaps this is one of the rare cases where the bridge serial number can be used for dating the guitars. A CIJ Fender with an A serial number is 1997-1998. Just looked at my JD. Same thing. Quote:

I had a red one but recently sold it. I've always loved the blue and sunburst. And these look pretty darn clean
Just doing my duty, Jelle!!!! Quote:
But still love to look at beauties like these...

that bridgeplate number is used as the serial over here when there is no other number, though changing that part on a stolen guitar would be an easy thing to do. I did have a used see through blue CIJ that had that part number as the serial on the warranty card because it was the only number available, but you can`t accurately date an MIJ Fender with that number...except if the production year happens to fall into the A years. I`ve never seen a JD tele in person in Japan, always been on line, odd ain`t it.

I got a JD in the late 90's and sold it 2 weeks later. Had a great feeling neck but that was it. It sounded horrible probably the worst sounding Tele Ive ever owned. It had no Tele bite snap or twang just sounded dead dull and lifeless unplugged or plugged in.
My guess is I just got a bad one which can happen on any model of guitar in any price range. But man this thing was just horrible. I had my 50's Classic MIM with the 53 lapsreel pickup at the same time and Id play the 50's Classic which sounded awesome then play the JD which sounded like the body was made of oatmeal. It looked great and played great the neck was one of the best ever but the sound really was the worst Ive ever experienced on any guitar. I had my dealer change the pickguard before I got it cause I didnt like the black on red.

I own an MIJ JD Telecaster circa 1986. Although there is some question about whether the JD Teles were produced this early, I purchased it from the original owner who is POSITIVE he bought it in 1986 AND our own Mark Davis confirmed the manufacture date based on body and neck stampings as well as the markings on the pots.
I did have the neck refretted by an expert as soon as I bought it. But, it is in basically mint condition. It is gorgeous. It has major MOJO. And, it is far and away the best playing/sounding guitar I have ever owned. I flippin love it! Mike |

Great pics here of the JD in all the colors. I love the clear blue and black ones! They look so yummy.

I`ve never had difficulty dating any of my 80s FJs, they have the pencil date on the neck butt. I have an early 90s custom edition 54-128 strat with the date written on a small piece of masking tape stuck to the underside of the pickguard. The JVs can be dated usually quite accurately by the JV serial number...some have been seen without pencil dates. I have seen some with all kinds of stuff in the neck pocket, much of which is not thoroughly understood though much is written on line.
Fender Japan has since day one built one offs and shop orders so there are many guitars out there that stump the "experts" or don`t show up in catalogs or books written in Japan, on the subject by Japanese authors. I frequently see models I had no idea existed...a mid 80s JD tele?...certainly is not out of the realm of possibility. Theres so much misinformation on the web that it`s not always easy to see the forest for the trees.

Those JD's are beautiful, I really liked the look of the sunbursts with maple neck and binding, something you don't come across too often. |

This thread is painful for me. I was all set to snipe the red JD in the auction and my bid would have won - but I clicked the wrong danged button and missed it! If I had been ten seconds earlier, I would have the guitar right now!

Mine measures 25mm (0.98") at the 12th fret and 23.5mm (0.93") at the 1st. 7.25" radius, 6230 fretwire, starts with a pronounced V profile at the nut and turns into a rather soft V going toward the heel.

Now just a second, young man! Aren't you the soul searching guy who, having received his new CIC Squier 50's Vibe Tele in perfect condition, wondered what he needed with any of these other geetars? We miss out on deals all the time, and that's OK, I think. I sure would like to have heard from you how she played, that is true.
