G&L ASAT's - like Lays potato chips ...
... you can't have just one! Got a new ASAT Bluesboy on eBay - couldn't pass it up, it was just going too cheap!!! It's the one on the right. Somebody stop me before my wife shoots me!
![]() ![]() Speaking of relics, like my relic'd Fender Bassman and Fender tweed guitar case? Methos

Uh-oh!
Quick - before the wife sees it, send the guitar to me, for er, "safe keeping". :D
VERY nice guitar - that's probably my favorite, all around. Favorite color, pickup config, thinline, binding... grrr... if you ever think you may not want it any more, you got a buyer lined up right here!

Methos you're
killin me!
The new one (maple board) joins an early '90's Classic and Special (RW). I can't wait to play it. (I'll try to post some pics.) That Bluesboy looks sweet. I've always been happy with the neck pickups on my other two, but how 'bout some feedback on your sound with that front 'bucker. Bassman looks cool, too. Regards, Bill Roseman |

I was thinking of grabbing that one.
It's a real looker. There was another semi-hollow with an orange clear finish that I also admired. How does it play? Sound? What neck did that one have, anyway? And congrats -- I think you got a beauty on your hands.

Thanks to all, I'm glad you're all envious - it's making the dirty looks from the wife a little less painful!
It's typical G&L quality all the way around. The neck is a standard #2 (7.5" radius, 1 5/8" at the nut) with a rosewood fretboard. I don't particularly like the neck - yet - as the ASAT Special I have (pictured above on the left) has the #1 V-shaped neck which I am used to and like very much. I also generally prefer maple fretboards on my electrics. If the new one had the V-shaped, gun-oiled maple neck and fretboard it would be perfect but I also liked the idea of the guitar being significantly different than the Special. I also got it for a really good price. It's funny but I was the second highest bidder on that guitar when it first ran but the winning bidder backed out or something and the guy reposted it. I emailed him to see if he just wanted to accept my high bid from the first auction but he never replied back so I just watched it and jumped in at the end and got if for almost $200 LESS than the first auction! Righteous!!! As for the pickups, the Seth Lover humbucker in the neck is definately much warmer than the stock neck MFD of the Special and the single coil MFD in the bridge of the Bluesboy just spanks! It's a nice combo with the two and very varied using one or the other. I love the look of the clear blue over the swamp ash and the wood binding really sets if off. I'm going to play it alot and see if the neck grows on me more. If not I'll let you know before I put it back up on eBay!!! (That or maybe I'll check into getting a gun-oiled maple neck from G&L!) Still, pound for pound you cannot beat the ASAT Special as a well-rounded, versatile guitar. It's a real workhorse. The red-swirl finish is awesome but chips way too easy which is probably why they stopped making it. I got the very last one ever made. The one thing I do really like about the Bluesboy is the old ashtray style bridge. I really like that type better than the Dual Fulcrum Vibrato ones used on the standard ASAT Specials. I also really rather have string-through-body, another reason for the ashtray bridge. Methos

I want to chime in on the Bluesboy. I bought one in Nov. and am very pleased. The humbucker is really nice. Superb build quality as well. I saw a sunburst ASAT classic go for just over $400 last night on ebay. Fantstic bargain!

Emmitt,
Like the collection - the first G&L I ever almost bought was an ASAT Deluxe in blueburst with the f-hole. I had special ordered it as a semi-hollow but didn't want an f-hole. It came with the f-hole anyway as the guy ordering it though it would sell better with the f-hole. The maple neck was incredibly figured birdseye maple. It was truly a beautiful guitar but the price and the f-hole scared me away. The teal green on the 62 makes me cringe (I hate teal or any color remotely near it) but that other limited edition G&L with the three MFD's is sweet. Do you find the middle MFD gets in the way of playing? I've heard from others with that model that it takes a while to get used to it (mostly those that have been used to a two pup Special and then added the third pup. Dross, Yes, there have been some deals on ebay. I hadn't been on in quite awhile and was dissappointed at the number of retailers on there listing G&L's at list price but that guy in California that I bought mine from is doing a brisk business. He's putting brand new ASAT's, top quality ones, too, on there for no reserve. Right after mine there was one on there, a Deluxe with an incredible flame top, natural finish and f-hole. It wen for just over $1,100 - a good price for that guitar. I think he's stealing them from the factory! (just kidding) Methos

I'd buy a used one....
...but I'll never buy a new G&L, under any circumstances. Why? Simply because I think their president/plant manager (not sure of his title?) is a world-class jerk; IN MY OPINION, he's done more to hurt his sales than help them, by participating at the G&L fan website. Just my opinion, but there's no way in the world I'd do anything to help his company be profitable.
That said, they make good guitars for a fair price. I like the ASAT Specials, the ones with the large pickups. But only used ones. :)

Anyway, this isn't a rant on you or your opinion... I'm glad G&L's doing as well as they are, as a company I'll take them any day over the current day Fender, Gibson, or PRS, for example... all my current Fenders were bought used. Buy used, play for free (more or less)... ;-) Jon |

General Thread Reply................
....For my friend Colorado E, I met Dave this past summer and I can understand your feelings about him and his company G&L. As Jon C. said, I've had nothing but good dealings with him and think he tries to help whenever he can. Some of his dealers I don't care for, but I think Dave has good intentions. But, not everyone would agree with that, so no problem. I can agree with you about buying a new G&L...NOT a good idea.
...About that Ocean Turquoise '62 Reissue Tele in the picture, it's probably best that I'm color blind. That is one guitar my wife hates, too. I like the color, but know I don't see it like others do. I love playing it however as it is a special good instrument. ...About the LE from G&L, I don't seem to run into the middle pickup at all. My picking style seems to miss it so I don't have a problem. I've had other 3 Pickup G&L's and just have no problem with them. (I've owned 2 ASAT S-3, and an ASAT III along with Legacies, S-500 and an ASAT Z-3) G&L's are good guitars, but each has it's own vibe and feel. I'm down to 3 right now after a major disappointment with a special order I did with them. I will NOT do that again. Take care. Emmitt O.

Jon/Emmitt...
...no problem, I'm glad you guys have had good dealings. And in fairness, he probably ain't thinking I'm the nicest guy in the world, and I'm sure others at the web page feel that way too. It's simply my opinion about him, what I stated. It's all good.
One thing I will say, though you occasionally see the "real steal" at eBay on used G&Ls, they're few and far between. The resale value has really begun to creep up. Basic ASATs are going $550-$700 pretty regularly now; I remember not that long ago when the high end was around $500. I also finally got to check out some Tributes locally, a local shop started carrying them. Not bad at all; I didn't get to plug in but the fit & finish seemed nice. Rough fret edges, but that's fairly common out here in Colorado with our zero humidity. take care, -Eric
